Refin or leave as is?

Post by serial » Sat Mar 10, 2007 9:49 pm

I just picked this '66 Jag up off of Fleabay.  Actually isn't too bad-needs a new nut cut (high E slot is too deep) and the tuners need to be replaced (has Kluson Mustang/Bronco/MM/Duo tuners on it) as they slip a bit.  I have always loved bright yellow guitars so I happen to LOVE the finish, but it's a little too shiny compared to the reliced look on the neck.  I'm thinking that I could beat it up good though...

If I refinned it, it would be a sparkle/metalflake job.  I really like the neck feel and the pickups sound great. Bridge pickup looks like an AVRI, the neck is original.  The white guard is from my other '66, so I'll have one made for this one, but I think it looks good on there-MUCH better than tort. I suppose it's obvious that I like subtle finishes.

What do y'all think?

Leave it - it's awesome.  There's something about offsets that allows them to look great in just about any color.  Could you imagine a Strat or Tele looking that good in yellow?  I was initially convinced that I would refin my metallic pink JM I scored on eBay a while back.  Now it's my fave.

leave it - it really is an awesome colour - just gig the hell out of it, and get some natural relicing going :)

either, that, or go down the Nash route and get your Belt Sander out ;)

Incidentally, I once saw a '70's musicmaster bass in that colour. Did Fender ever do that sort of yellow in the '70's?

I'd say leave it, unless you had your heart set on another color. You don't want to be chasing that other color forever.

Either way, I'd wait a bit. I had plans to refin my yellow 59 before I bought it, but after having it in my possession for a few days it really grew on me.

I like it. It looks cool...

Not the run-of-the-mill custom color from the standard pallet.

I'm leaning that way.  It's similar to the Monaco Yellow that Fender offered in 1981-until the Strat Plus came out in '87 or so, they didn't offer that finish.  I've had two yellow (MIJ) Strats-an early 80s Tokai that I bought new and a later 62 RI.
I'll have to find another offset to do in sparkle!  THanks for the input-I'll leave it for now.

My son has a Powerhouse Strat in that "Grafitti Yellow" - same color, and it looks amazing.

You could always finish another Jag body and rotate 'em!

It does look like Monaco Yellow.

The Capri Orange they did back then is one of my all time faves.

Man I just love that color. Only a Jazzmaster looks so great in yellow. I've seen the Strats in it, but they don't pull it off like the JM.  It's kinda like a yellow Corvette vs a yellow Ferrari or a Lamborghini. The Ferrari and Lambo pull it off to perfection, the Vette looks good too, but not as good.
