Project: binding & blocks

Post by mezcalhead » Thu Sep 21, 2006 1:58 pm

Some of you may know "fatback" from TGP and HC, the guy who makes all the great videos demoing various pedals.
Anyway, he was selling this a couple of months or so ago and I snagged it:

I kept quiet about it until there was somewhere worth posting new threads in. :)
So now I have yet another long project with pieces to be on the lookout for .. a body, pups, etc.

Note the lack of decal .. a guilt-free matching headstock opportunity!

Here's mine - even more of a guilt-free candidate for a matching (Jag) headstock! I'm leaning towards OlyWhite. I bought a Warmoth body to match up with it, not wanting to play the vintage $$$ game.

talking of loose necks, I'd love to gather a bit of money early next year and snag another '61 for a future project.

wouldn't be anything off the wall...normal Jazzmaster...I just love the neck profile, and would love to have a spare.

It was on a mismatched body .. '62 IIRC, which was part of the reason he wanted to sell it. He had the body refinished in white with a mint guard, put an aftermarket neck on it (USACG? can't remember) and Lollar pups and was very happy with the result. There are a couple of threads referring to it at TGP and HCFX .. you can actually see the guitar in action in a couple of his videos on Youtube. I'll try and dig out a link for you sometime .. all his vids are worth watching, very entertaining.

There is a bit of a reddish tide mark around the heel of the neck .. I've no idea whether that was from a refin or the original finish, and I can't remember what colour the body used to be although it was definitely a fairly unpleasant refinish of some kind.

As for my plans, all I really know is that I need a vintage post-CBS body and hopefully pups to match it, and that I'm going to match the headstock with the body refin. I'm leaning towards black at the moment, but it isn't anywhere close to being the first project on my list so anything could happen really.

that mod is not too unusual.  when i got my 64 jm, the head looked just the same.
jms and jags were often converted to 10-string. reason is that was just easy to do
because of the bridge & tremolo design.

That's terrible! At least the person who defaced my Jag headstock had the decency to sand off the decal before adding holes.  :o
