Recommendations for neck similar to Mascis JM?

Hello everyone,

I just bought a used MIM Classic Player that arrived...a LOT more used than the seller conveyed via pictures or description. I'm going to keep it because it's a black one with tort pickguard and I was planning to do some mods anyway (mastery trem, halon bridge to get rid of the TOM, probably pickups). But I'm looking at this chip in the fretboard at the 12th fret and thinking that I might one day want to switch the neck. The Squier JMJM neck is the best fit for my large mitts. I've had a few of those necks on multiple guitars. I'm going to keep an eye out for another one (I don't really care about headstock names for this guitar) but wanted to ask:

What are other JM (or strat) necks you'd recommend that are close to the dimensions of the Squier Mascis neck? Another Classic Player JM neck? A Strat neck? (if so, please be specific as I've never owned a Strat). '60s Vintera JM?

The Vintera Jm neck has a smaller/thinner profile then a JM/JM. One of the reasons I sold mine.

I think that the Gold/Car Squier Jm has a simelar neck to that of the JM/JM (the ones known as the as the "Iron Man" Jazzmaster) I think it's essentially a JM/JM Jm in a different colour.

I had some luck with chinese necks with a 9.5 radius, jumbo frets and a thicker neck then the std Jm from Squier. (but these can be a mixed bag)
But they do B&B necks if you are into that and a pretty convincing Fender alike headstock.

I also like the old Squier Affinity H/H neck a lot (mine was from 2013), very nice profile. Had one for years on my no.1 Jm (recently sold it only because I found a Guitarmill neck for a very good price)

some of the old 1999-2000 Squier Affinity strats (first series with the big headstock) have a profile simelar to the JM/JM
I recently bought a used 1999 Squier Affinity Strat for cheap, kept the neck and sold the rest.

Thank you very much for all of these options. I didn't know about most. I'm in Germany right now and an "Iron Man"-looking JM just popped up on the classifieds but...the neck has a skunk stripe so I'm thinking it's not the same as the JMJM neck.

I think he’s referring to the squier deluxe Jazzmaster TR model, which is exactly the same as a JMJM but in candy apple red. It does not have a skunk stripe, so the one you’re seeing locally is not the same model.

If you search for Jazzmaster neck on eBay you’ll often find ones from china, which are the same as either the fender modern player Jazzmaster (same profile as JMJM neck), or a squier deluxe neck. The fender will have a silver logo, and the squier will have the older gold logo with rosewood. You’ll have to drill the neck pocket down holes on either, and you’ll have to file the nut slots. They both take the MIM vintage style tuners. They can also be a bit iffy on the fretwork.

59’ profile from warmoth is pretty close, maybe a smidge bigger. Get one in roasty maple and you’re there.

As a fellow large mitt-ed person, what is it you like about the Mascis JM? Is it decently thick/wide? Just curious since Ive never tried one and I assumed it was the usual 60's thin profile.

I do have a Squier Affinity JM from 2020 that has one of the best feeling necks Ive played (after oiling the neck/fretboard). It feels fairly wide and fills my hand nicely, very comfy for chords. Very well built too for the price. Not sure how easy they are to get in Germany but I see them pop up time to time here in the US for about $90-$120ish.

Here is one for sale (Warehouse sale from China) - on eBay - I ordered a Coronado II neck from the same seller and like it very much - I don‘t know if these are B-stocks or leftovers - but they‘re selling them at least since 2020.

Squier 40th Anniversary JM necks are pretty close.

I don't have a JMJM. For those who do, do you have neck depth measurements, that could be comparable to a contemporary Fender model in my chart below ? (NB Vintera II "Late-'50s C" neck specs not yet released) Fender never publish neck depths for Squiers IIRC.

I have several JMJM/Deluxe necks, but I would have to take the strings off to measure. I'll report back when I get those. The one thing that's important to note about them is that it's not as much the depth that gives it a unique feel as much as the width and shoulders. The nut is a little over 1.675"/42.6mm wide, so definitely wider than the standard options from Squier and MIM Jazzmasters. Secondly, there's a bit of a roundover built into the neck carve, so it doesn't feel sharp at the edges. It's probably actually a thinner neck than how it feels, if that makes sense.

As specified below, the nut is slightly wider and I'd say that continues through the upper frets. But the main thing to me is the C shape is a very full one. Just works for me!

Hello, I fix/mod guitars as a hobby for some time now, how bad is the chipping on the neck? is it only on the Rosewood or on the Maple? I did an excellent repair on a badly damaged Epiphone Casino Rosewood fretboard some years back. Very simple task and a good result. Any loose Rosewood splinters must be removed, clean the area with mineral turps, not once but maybe three times. I used a water based putty from a hardware store, it was available in different colours so I went with black, spread it into the damage and let it sit for a few days, used a razor blade to scrape some excess off, then a very fine sandpaper going with the grain to finish, let it sit for a couple more days then re-oiled the whole fret board with Linseed oil (my favourite), after a good rub with a clean cloth I had to look very hard to spot the repair. I sold that guitar a couple years ago and the buyer examined every detail of the guitar and was unaware of the repair until I told him, he couldn't find it! I encourage you to have a shot at repairing yourself before buying another neck.
