Series mod for Jaguar
Is this a worthwhile mod...I mean are the two pickups in series a usable sound?
I found this diagram on the Short Scale forum. I like how it doesn't mess with any of the Jag's current tones, and am thinking of giving it a try (without the phase switching). I hardly ever leave both pickups "off" anyway.

I did the series mod, I liked the sound in series better than parallel. Plus it was good soldering practice doing a simple mod like that.

The current American Deluxe Teles with the S1 switch have both pickups in series with the button down and the 3-way in the middle position. It's an awesome sound.
Have you tried it out yet?

Wow, that's really cool! My Fatdog Dano has two lipsticks in series and it sounds incredible, so this would really rock the house.

My AVRI has this mod (the topmost one). At first, I didn'tknow what in the hell was wrong with it! I couldn't figure out why I still had sound when both pickups should have been "off". Then I pulled the plate and saw the wiring.

Re: Series mod for Jaguar
I didn't do it yet, but have decided to give it a try. I'd forgotten I'd done a neck/bridge Series mod to a Strat a few years back, and I remember liking the sound of it.
But first I need to finish rounding the fret ends. When I bought the Jag it had some fret sprout, which the store fixed but they didn't bother rounding the ends over. That was two summers ago, and now with winter they're sticking out a little more, so I'm just doing doing it myself this time.

Series has a fuller sound with more output.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

Keeping it relatively simple:haledixon wrote: can someone explain how this will affect the sound?
Standard wiring is 2 pickups wired in parallel.
When 2 pickups are wired in series with each other, the sound becomes a bit more "humbucker-like."
In other words, output is louder, mids are increased, it's a bit more "chunky."
Wiring in series does not turn two single coils into a humbucker - that requires one pickup having reverse polarity and reverse coil winding to the other.
There are other kinds of series/parallel mods, but in this case, the result - both pickups in series - will sound a little bit more like a humbucker and not quite as much like two separate single coils.
I hope this answers your question.

Re: Series mod for Jaguar
The unique thing about it is that the pickups remain their distance from each other (obviously)... but the signal is passing through one and then the other before being amplified. This effectively doubles the output as well as providing the two-pickup-on fatter sound. The reason it cannot provide the humbucking effect is that if wired opposite for hum-cancelling, it would ground out with both pickups on.
I've done it to a Tele using a four-way switch and it does provide an unusual hot/thick sound, much different then the standard two-pickup-on parallel position. I'd like to hear it on a Jag!

If I have a jaguar I will do it..I find the "in parallel" position quite useless..not very warm tone and not very sparkly too..With "in series" position you can also use that as a boost switch to break the preamp stage of your amp...

what do you mean? i have the pickups of my tele wired in series (the neck pup is RWRP) and i get both double output and hum-cancelling.fullerplast wrote: The reason it cannot provide the humbucking effect is that if wired opposite for hum-cancelling, it would ground out with both pickups on.

Re: Series mod for Jaguar
Your right, Jonas, your tele would be wired Series out of Phase. It will not ground out. It just sounds a little thinner than series in phase, an effect which is decreased with more distance between pickups.mynameisjonas wrote: what do you mean? i have the pickups of my tele wired in series (the neck pup is RWRP) and i get both double output and hum-cancelling.
For a geek definition of the electrical difference between series and parallel.
