Vox Phantom template

Post by karmablock » Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:38 am

Does anyone one have a lead on an accurate drawing or template?

I found this one online on a different forum but I noticed that it had a mistake by the neck pocket and attempted to correct it (I’m new to Inkscape). I went ahead and had it printed to scale. The scale that is on this drawing is accurate both in person and in Inkscape but the neck pocket is too small (only by 1/8”). But with those two errors I’m not sure if I want to use this drawing at all.

I used that one recently and scaled it down for a CBG body. Short of printing out and scaling from a head-on photo, that was the best that I could find.
I tried building one that way about 14 years ago out of glued blocks of maple. I finished it, built it up and after a week in my bedroom all the joints warped.

Building guitars off internet blueprints is scary business. Have had a couple botched builds from blindly trusting the source!

Oh wow! Was the wood still green? This is my first attempt at building a guitar body from scratch.

Indeed they are! I got impatient and cut out these two on mdf. I left one over sized and it looks more proportional but that might just be me. I found one person who makes Phantom template but the quality seems a bit rough and the routes are for a generic humbucker layout. I still may order one for comparison.

I don't think so, it was some leftover from building a replica V2 sculpture. I did glue the grains at 90 degrees from each other, so maybe should have glued then left for a while to stabilise. It did weigh quite a bit too, even for a Phantom!
I'm sure a full size one is in my future though.

I went ahead and order the one Phantom template I could find because I was doubting the plan I used.
But I have two thoughts:
1) it's huge! I'm wondering if this based off a Phantom Bass.
2) the quality is questionable. Lots fraying and soft edges from the CNC. (I've heard CNC templates are supposed to the best but the laser cut Marauder templates I got from Faction are higher quality)

My 3/4" mdf template from a drawing found online on top of the bought 1/4" Masonite (not sure) template. (Marauder copy underneath them)

I put a picture of a Vox Phantom in my CAD software and dimensioned the edge bottom of the fretboard to be 2.22."

This gave me a rough dimension of the guitar being about 11 inches wide by 18.1 inches long.

Thank you for this!

I took measurements of both the templates. Mine is 9.5” wide and 17.63” long. The template I bought is 12.38” wide and 20.38” long. So neither are accurate.

yeah that's what I did. I printed the template at different sizes, chose the one I thought worked best. I made 2 versions, and stupidly painted them (for nothing, they got ditched) but wasn't happy- they're a strange weight/weight distribution. £rd one got finished, I'd wanted dakota red but messed up the paint job...so did it light blue.Image[/

Did anyone end up finding a good phantom template? I'm looking to build a 12 and cant find many templates around online.

I ended up making one on Inkscape and had it printed out. I glued it to MDF and cut it out. Here is a picture a before I refined it. It's been on the backburner because I ended up making a Telecaster first.
