Just made my first bone nut and saddle.

Post by rhythmjones » Tue Jun 09, 2020 3:51 pm

I'd worked on nuts and saddles from a setup perspective but I had never made fresh ones from bone blanks before.

Finally got around to doing some on my cheap nylon string and it worked out well! Really improved the sound of the guitar too!

Nice work!
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

For anyone contemplating the same thing, what specific tools did you use ? Which nut files ? Stewmac nut vise ? Stewmac slot spacing ruler, etc etc ?

I have the Hosco electric nut file set and used the .046 side for the wound strings and the .036 side for the plain strings. Other than that I just used the old nut as a guide and eyeballed the string spacing so that the strings didn't kink laterally and filed it down by hand with a mounted dremel, metal file, 60 grit and 200 grit sandpaper.

I used this video for reference:

Classical guitars don't have fingerboard radius but I did put a slight curve on the saddle just for ease of fingering.

I've set up enough guitars and fixed enough bad from-the-factory nuts that I can pretty much do it by eyeballing it at this point.
