Lake Placid Blue build content

Post by offsetgamematch » Mon May 11, 2020 8:29 am

So I finished up my first partscaster build last year and never got round to doing a post on it. Given circumstances, now feels like a good time to do so!

So my ‘dream guitar’ ever since I started playing (about 10 years ago) was a lake placid blue jazzmaster. I vividly remember seeing a picture of one when I knew nothing about electric guitars and thinking ‘holy shit that’s the coolest guitar I’ve ever seen’ and I’ve had the Offset bug from then.

Last spring I went through some.. stuff and was desperately looking for a distraction so decided to build a partscaster. I knew I wanted to put a Squier J Mascis neck on it as I own that guitar and love the feel of it. Apart from that, I wanted a matching headstock and a black anodized guard (always thought those Sonic Youth sigs looked awesome). I’m lucky I’m UK based and a big fan of staytrem bridges too. So after watching hours of YouTube videos on how to spray nitro from a can, I ordered a body online and some cans of sealer, primer, clear and of course lake placid blue.

There were some complications on the way. The most memorable being a bird shitting on it just after I’d sprayed what was meant to be the final coat of colour :'( but on the whole, it was a perfect distraction for me and turned out better than I thought. I’ll put some pics below, it’s really hard to capture the right shade on an iPhone camera. The pics of the body alone are about the right colour. I did choose to put a fender decal on the headstock which I know is controversial. I wont be selling it and since it’s for my use, I figured that’s ok. It’s also still got the J Mascis signature on the back of the headstock...

I’ve spent 12 months tweaking the setup and it finally plays like I want it to. I got a set of Mojo pickups for it which I’d seen recommended here and they’re just awesome.

So if anyone’s contemplating lockdown and weighing up a build for the first time - i’d thoroughly recommend it. Just learn from me, if you’re spraying outside, be on the look out for birds!

Looks awesome, you happen to like all my favorite parts from the Sonic Youth and J Mascis guitars.

Beautiful! LPB is one of my favorite colors, too.

That shade of LPB is heavenly. Is the guard a black anodized!?

Way way into this build. Color looks amazing! The Mascis neck is so good too, I've been thinking of doing a build with one ever since I got rid of my JMJM. It was by far one of the best necks on any guitar I ever owned. Is the body a Warmoth one?

This is inspiring. I'm also thinking about doing a partscaster build. Not sure I want to deal with painting though. The upside is that if I paint it I could get the matching headstock without spending a fortune.

I'm new so I don't have much street credit around here, but... daaaamn! That is nice. Congrats. I am about to pull the trigger on something offset soon myself. This is just pushing me further. Great work.

I may be the only one here, but as much as I love the looks Jazzmasters and Jaguars completed, I think they are even sexier without guards. Something about the shape of the routes just looks super cool to me. I'd almost be tempted to make a clear acrylic guard for one of mine if I ever have one...

Thanks for all the nice comments guys! And yeah the pickguard is anodized.

To those contemplating their own first builds, I’d recommend it. Just put the time in beforehand so you know what you’re doing before the paint arrives
