Why do people prefer Musikraft/Guitar Mill necks over Warmoth?

Post by hamletpowpowpow » Mon Apr 06, 2020 1:14 pm

I've been poking around the forums quite a bit, and it seems like the consensus is that Musikraft and Guitar Mill make the best necks out there.
Guitar Mill is the priciest, followed by Musikraft. I can get almost exactly what I want from Warmoth for about $100-$150 less. Not interested in MJT, I can't get down with their finishes.

I know Warmoth deals in quantity - but is the quality that much worse? I keep hearing that you'll need the frets leveled/dressed and the edges rolled, and that can cost $75-$100 or so.

Quality matters a lot to me, as does fender accuracy. I'm doing a partscaster, sure - but I want it to be Fender quality, if not higher.

Warmoth makes excellent quality necks. To be honest though, no neck manufacturer is going to be perfect right out the gate. You'll want to make sure your nut is cut correct and that your frets ate leveled. It is true that warmoth on has sharp fretboard edges.

Personally, the only thing that stops me from buying a warmoth neck is that I don't like their neck profiles. I only go with musikraft because they do offer a profile I like.

I’ve had necks from all 3. I love Warmoth necks! My Musikraft Maple Jazzmaster neck with black blocks and binding is very nice too.

One issue I have with Warmoth necks is with the Jazzy and strat necks (maybe tele necks also) is that certain looks only come with that fretboard overhang style vs no overhang. Also no binding and block option. (I love their necks though, especially the roasted maple stuff!)

Warmoth's Fender headstock shapes are really inaccurate. I discovered this with the Tele neck I bought from them. To make it even worse than just wrong, it also lacks material where it would be needed to correct the shape. They don't care , though.

I've never had or played any Musikraft or Guitar Mill necks, but the handful of Warmoth necks I've had have been great. I only had one (out of 6 or 7?) that needed any kind of fret work, and that was minimal. Most I've had have been comfortable and ready to play outside the box. I don't generally care if the headstock shape is absolutely Fender accurate, so that isn't an issue for me. Otherwise they are very well-built.

I have a Warmoth neck on my Partsmaster. Great neck. Didn't need any work out of the box, either. Plays great.

What's inaccurate about the Jazzmaster heads? They make a point of saying that it's based directly off a 62' Jazzmaster.

Even Fender doesn't make the most accurate Fender necks.

Warmoth's best deals are almost always compound 10-16" radius necks -not for me

No clue. As a lefty, I don't really have access to most of that stuff anyways. I do hear Musikraft is close to head shape though.

I'd love to try a 9.5 or 7.25 to feel the difference (again, lefty), but my Tele has a 10-16" compound radius and it's an amazing neck to play on. That said, I've only had a couple of other guitars, and I don't know what the radii were...

Even with their new vintage construction necks?

I don't like Warmoth necks because of their Gibson-style blocks. For Fender B&B necks I just can't abide.

This type comment makes me crazy. Inaccurate for WHICH headstock?? Fender changed headstocks all the time, sometimes by a little, sometimes by a LOT. Look at all these, scroll to the bottom to see them overlayed. So... WHICH headstock??

Your tele neck - where did you get it made? Warmoth's standard is a 10-16" compound. I agree, I find compound radii to be pretty nice.
EDIT: Just reread yr posts. All your necks are Warmoth.

I grew up playing Rickenbackers, always loved those necks, and they're also 10 radii.

Agreed. And who can tell by looking at without breaking out a measuring tape? I've got a pretty good eye for details, but without knowing the specs, I don't think I can tell the difference between a Fender, GuitarMill or Musikraft JM Neck. A CBS, JM, Strat neck, sure - but these licensed necks all look visually spot on to me.
