Duplicolor Thread

Post by Danley » Thu Nov 14, 2019 6:00 pm

Well, I like using it - enough I’m posting my most recent example below pre-clearcoat, such is my excitement. Great, easy stuff vs. nitro.

Figured a lot have used it - feel free and post yours here as inspiration to others, make sure to name your color! :)

I like Duplicolor in spray cans and in quarts. There are other sources for acrylic lacquer too but that would be in another thread.

Wow - it’s pretty amazing the Medium Metallic Blue goes from electric to more subdued, between those first two guitars (let alone the shadow/clear one.) Was there a difference in finishing technique with the first two met blues?

Many years ago, different primer probably, light grey vs dark grey. Maybe more coats too. Vastly different light & different cameras too. That is one of my favorite blues.

Taking absolutely ZERO credit for the work or photos (OSG's resident vintage offset necromancer will did all this), but the Duplicolor Universal Black Metallic (BUN0090) on my '65 D&B Jaguar does a pretty good stand-in for CFM, though I appreciate it for doing its own thing:

I use Duplicolor cans for color, they have the best selection of colors & spray gun for clear if I feel like dragging it all out & cleaning it after I'm done. It takes at least 3 spray cans of clear to get a decent finish. A spray gun can put it on thicker/quicker & more evenly. It's possible to get acrylic lacquer in cool colors in quarts but it's expensive. I found a place that sells automotive quality acrylic lacquer in spray cans and you can get nearly any color code such as this '65 Pontiac Iris mist:

I love Duplicolor perfect match stuff. It sprays well and dries fast. Pretty much every guitar I have ever painted was done with Duplicolor. I have had bad results with their clear not drying well and being gummy but I have also had some problems occasionally with other clears. Their color paint has never given me any issues.

This looks like Charcoal Frost! I'd love to see what would happen if you hit it with some tinted clear coat to green it a little bit...
