Full Scale Cobain Jaguar Finished PG. 3! :D

Post by HNB » Sat Sep 28, 2019 1:20 pm

I made a full scale Cobain style Jaguar out of a blacktop Jazzmaster body a ways back. I really liked it, but the tremolo being in the non-standard location bugged me so I sold it. I had an itch to make another one that had the tremolo in the right place so I started getting stuff together. Here is what I have so far.

Got the plates. The lower control plate is on the way.

The body is coming in. Once it comes I will use a printed copy of this pickguard to cut away the places the plates will go to make a pickguard template.

I had a bound neck that I sanded and tinted/stained for it. Should be cool.

Thanks!

I am making photo copies of pickguards to get the look right. The goal is something like this. :)

Got to work on making the custom guard template. I cut out the shapes for where the metal plates will go. Then I added the jag switch hole over the top. Last, I adjusted some of the screw holes to work with the guard better. :)

Coming out nice! Now tell us more about the name! Any connections to Nirvana or Kurt?

The name and quote below comes from words from "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I know that Kurt kinda hated the song because it got so much play and that sort of stuff isn't very punk, but it is a pretty significant song in music that still appeals to new listeners. When I work on custom guitars I like to give them names from music that goes with the build or makes me think of the build. (Like the Iceman I am building has words from Deep Six by Marilyn Manson. I thought the line "You wanna know what Zeus said to Narcissus? 'You better watch yourself.'" was pretty awesome. LOL)

I listened to a bunch of Nirvana and read through lyrics and I thought contagious was fitting. It also seemed to work with some of the aspects of Nirvana Kurt didn't really like as much. (Becoming mainstream put some pressure and kinda made him feel like he had to do certain stuff to keep people happy.) Nirvana's music was very much contagious. While my guitar won't be a clone of his, it is totally inspired by it. It is kind of what I tend to do with my builds lately. I see something I think looks cool and try to make it work for me by tweaking it or the color or bridge used. It is fun and something that makes me feel good doing.

Body came in. I got a partial refund because the body has a couple finish cracks. Nothing structural so it will work fine. It should look great. I was able to use the partial refund for some parts. I have the bridge, tremolo, and tuners coming in. :) All I will need now is pickups, strap buttons, switches, pots, and knobs.

Custom pickguard is done!! Looks really nice for inexpensive tort material.

The grover tuners also came in for the bound neck. Installed pretty easy. I had already used a reamer to enlarge the mounting holes.

Looks great so far. Where did you get the modified plate for the 3-way pickup switch?

LOL Yup. :) I like that name a lot. I modified the symbol to make it a little more painty. :)
