First build: The Moth

The Moth:
Image

A while back I saw a "Shou Sugi Ban" jazzmaster and proceeded to check out every "Shou Sugi Ban" or "Yakasugi" build I could find. Basically you burn the body with a blowtorch and then finish it any number of ways (I went with Tung Oil and beeswax). I bought the body (Tasmanian Blackwood) off a local guy here in Oz, and then commissioned another great local luthier to make the neck for me. Burning the body with a blowtorch was a scary experience - lots of cracks and sizzles. I was worried the two piece body might split in half on the seam, but it held together fine. Went whole hog with Staytrem (thanks to brother in law who lives in London) and Mastery bridge. Sunday Hand Wound Woody pickups, Gotoh SD91 locking tuners. Took around 8 months to gather all parts, get neck built etc. The headstock is painted in Black 3.0 - the world's blackest paint. Came out great, and it plays beautifully. Really get that "piano" chime and girth from it. Hope you guys like it.

That's awesome! Very nice work.

I'd love to see some more detail photos of the body, it's a cool look!

Looking great! Good work! Gotta love matching headstock and block inlays! :? Also black with tort is my second favorite tort combination! So classy!
