Paint chrome control plate

Post by ChristheRat » Sat Jun 08, 2019 11:34 pm

Has anyone painted a chrome control plate? Looking to do a gloss black, but have no idea what paint to use and if there’s a certain process? Thanks:)

Paint (or anything) doesn't stick to chrome well. It'll eventually chip/peel off easily. I've used sprays and paint markers. Even magic so-called "this primer will make paint stick to chrome" products don't give you enduring cover.

Some people first remove the chrome plating, then paint the steel. Care needs to be taken as the chrome particles are health hazardous.

You could try electro-plating. (I haven't)

Another option could be to use the metal plate as a template to cut a new one from Scratchplate material?....

.

The other option is get a roll of black vinyl shelf paper at the kitchen department. Peel 'n Stick. Trim the edges. Done.
I've covered some nasty strat pickguards before rather than replace. You can get different designs too.

I had good success using adhesion promoter before spray paint when I painted a chrome grille on my truck.
