Found a tutorial on how to make tort

Post by Mechanical Birds » Thu May 16, 2019 8:37 pm

Sorry if this is a commonly known thing or if it’s already been talked about. Like once a week I spend a half hour trying to research where, specifically, Fender sources their tort from in the 60s, like hoping one day I’d be lucky and a new story would pop up explaining exactly where it came from, why it stopped, how to reach someone alive who could still make it haha, just anything because there is an offensively small amount of information out there about it. Even the old heads I know who’ve been repairing guitars since the late 1960s can never tell me anything definitive other than it came from Italy.

I’ll forever hate myself for not loading up on Spitfire guards before he doubled the price and made them a thing I’ll never be able to pull the trigger on, so I’ve been trying to find some kind of tutorial, considering the fact that I think we can definitively say there aren’t any other options out there for the good stuff.

Ran across a link to this thread in another forum and about caught my bedroom on fire in excitement. Seems like something a lot of people could pull off nicely with a little practice and is something I’m excited to mess with when I can afford to spend the money on materials.

Now, the one the guy makes is specifically an acoustic guard, so single layer, no extreme bevel or anything. I’m gonna have to alter the mold in some way to allow me to add the tort to an existing multi-ply white guard, but as far as I can tell that shouldn’t be too tall an order. First post of the tutorial appears about halfway down on pg. 26 and it’s from December 25, in case you get lost.

Pumped to try this!

This is marvelous!!!
I remember some time ago Deed_Poll posted some very, very promising tort made out of epoxy and it looked splendid, could be that the makers were the same people/using the same kind or recipe.
I love this aspect of the internet where a combined force towards a common goal proves to be more effective than CSI and CIA :w00t:

I just came here to say "tortorial" but didn't have enough brain cells to make a proper setup.

Honestly thinking fuck it and maybe I’ll just try and reach that guy and commission one haha

I’ve gone back and looked at this like every day since I first found it. I know there are a lot more diy-oriented posters here than me so I’m excited to see what happens.

Those Deed Poll guards were awesome for sure and I’ve been excited to see more of them. I hope it’s something he’s still pursuing

I’ve thought about doing something off these lines for a while. Need more time, space, resources..., but could be an fun project that could become a side hustle.

guy has to be a make-up artist.
I use a silicone called GI-1000 from Silicones Inc.
you an buy it direct, or possibly from Monstermakers.com (although I didn't check before posting this)

I only brought this up, because I've run into problems with other silicones, like he did. Smooth-on makes a bunch of cool casting materials, but I've not had much luck with their mold-making silicones.
I've not used the tin-based one that he mentions late in the thread, though.
(Christopher, also)
I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

From what I gather I think he's a VFX guy.
