Stupid Jags

Post by tammyw » Sat Mar 09, 2019 11:16 pm

So I was on a Jaguar kick this Winter and got suckered into buying a couple stupid MIM Jags.

Image Image

Ignoring the humbuckers and that stop tail bridge, the other big problem is that they each only have one chrome control plate. I didn't intend to do this when I got them, but I had some stuff lying around, and they pissed me off...

To begin with the shoreline gold, I had a tort guard that I decided not to use on another project and it was a little shrunken and curled. But the mounting holes practically lined up right, and it sits mostly flat when it's screwed down. Also had a two-switch upper plate off a Marrguar.

Image

I didn't like the gap there, so I ended up doweling the holes for the control plate, since the control cavity needed to be routed anyway, might as well get it to fit where I want it.

Image

So I routed out the upper cavity and expanded the the other switch cavity as well to fit a conventional 3-swtich plate instead of the toggle. I decided to stick with humbuckers since I had a set of Duncan Saturday night specials I wanted to try. The pickup bezels mount right to the body, so the pickguard just has big rectangular holes. The holes for the bridge posts also needed to be enlarged (or shifted downwards) to fit right.

Image

The pickguard was actually screwed down flat while I was cutting it, didn't have too much trouble. The upper switches ended up being coil-split and phase, and the other switches are normal with the strangle. Still haven't decided what to do with that bridge.

Image

Moving on to the tidepool, I was originally just going to replace the pickups, but when I tried to install a trembucker it wouldn't fit in the pickguard. And if you're going to modify a pickguard, why not go all the way?

Image

It turns out the single-switch AmPro upper plate lines up perfectly with the upper switch on this one, and it's already got a 3-way blade switch, so sticking with that pattern there's no routing needed, just a few new screw holes. I also doweled and re-drilled the mounting holes for the neck pickup, they were so crooked one was almost a quarter inch off.

Image

Well, I guess I didn't take any pictures while cutting up the pickguard, but I ended up using a '62 RI neck pickup and a Duncan '59 trembucker, kept the 3-way switching and the upper switch is just coil-split for the humbucker. And this is what it looks like now:

Image

I still need to fix up those necks - smooth out the fingerboard and roll the edges. The left one hasn't been oiled yet, but the right one was.

I find this so funny for some reason, in my head you bought those two jags cause you hated them so much and you wanted to make the world just a little bit better.

If only hardware came in the colour the reflection is showing here! Lovely caramel bronze.

Nice improvements. I'm always interested to see what's behind plates & pickguards, thanks for all the pics.

Never knew those Blacktop Jags came in Shoreline Gold at some point, I assume it's some kind of FSR model? Your mods look great, 100% improvement.

1000% better. That's what I never liked about my Blacktop and you fixed it. Kudos!

Just lovely. I love that the blue/green one still looks like a standard Jag due to the zebra humbucker ;D 8)

Yeah! Tidepool is such a classy Jag-colour!
Good work!
Had the same plan... but couldn't justify buying a new one for it... but the first (sadly red) used one are already showed up locally... so now my watch begins!

So this next one went in a totally different direction...

I've had this sonic gray Jaguar for a couple years, and it's nice, but I never really bonded with it. Probably just the color - should have just repainted it. But while looking for a pickguard for another project, I noticed WD had Jaguarillo pickguards. I'd recently seen someone playing a Jaguarillo, and on impulse ordered the pickguard and decided to convert this guitar.

First it needed some routing for the pickups, and unfortunately the switch was a little further up, too.

Image

Probably didn't need the full copper treatment over the areas that already had shielding paint, but whatever. Also needed a little block of wood in the rhythm cavity to meet one of the new pickguard screws.

Image

It got a pair of Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro's and a TB-16 '59/Custom humbucker. Just basic 5-way switching, and I kept the original pots and caps.

Image

The picture's kinda dull, but I really like the way the aged pearl looks between the maple neck and gray body. It turned out good, but the middle pickup doesn't have much character, so I might try to replace it with something hotter. It's been a nice change of pace from my other guitars anyway.

Nice work, humbuckers on pickguards (no bezel) tend to look a bit un-finished :) I'll say I've been a lot more flexible in my acceptance of the non-traditional aspects of some of the more recent offset models than I used to be - the Tune-O-Matic/stoptail would have been the first quirk I'd be tempted to get rid of, just not my preference for hardtails (probably pull out a drill to make an ugly string-through conversion.)
