Help me ID this body

Post by Lobsterdeth » Thu Mar 07, 2019 11:52 am

Kid is selling this "Squier" JM for 190 bucks on local CList, but the body has me wondering... does it look like an aftermarket body that was made with the F-hole on it already, or is it a Squier body that was refinished and had the F hole cut in it? I only have experience with AVRIs so I wanted a second opinion.

Thanks for your time guys!!!!!

Who cares, that thing looks sweet! Heh. In all seriousness though, my guess was a home-brew refin of a thinline Jag, but that price is way too low I think. (Can't quite tell the scale length in that pic...)

Looks like an after market Jazzmaster done in the style of a Danelectro MDF body. The lack of contours and the break or collapse in one of the little peak corners of the F hole are indicative of that. They were roughly $100 bucks when available on eBay. The neck and hardware all look to be squire. Those vintage goldfoils though! I would say that $190 is a fair price on that alone.

I added two more pics that the kid sent me, the neck doesn't seem to be one of those newer Squier JM/Jag necks since it doesn't have the serial on the
back of the headstock, the kid said he recalls it having the serial number on the front so...

I'm honestly at a loss... I just don't wanna nab this guitar and have it end up being a dud, I was planning on putting a tortoiseshell JM pickguard and pickups on it but am not a fan of thinline guitars at all... I'm guffawed atm.

This all makes a ton of sense.

I'm almost 100% sure this is a vmjm squier neck and corresponding hardware. The serial on these isn't under the finish and silk screened or paint stamped onto the back of the neck. Easily comes off with some high grit wet sandpaper...

If it is an MDF Jazzmaster body, I really wouldn't consider it a thinline. I would put into a class on par with a Danelectro. I mean, they're cheap, light and not very durable bodies, not constructed of wood... but they get the job done. Again, I think with those vintage goldfoils, you are fairly safe with it being valued at $190. It probably still needs work. But with vmjm necks going for around $80-100, and those MDF bodies going for around $100, I think it is slightly undervalued. ..

Have you asked it everything functions? Have you tried to barter with them?

See if you can find out what pickups are in it (i.e. Zenon, Teisco, Victoria)? I found similar vintage pickups going for $65-$70ish EACH on eBay.

Didn't try to barter, kid says the thing works fine but that it feedbacks like hell if you go near the amp or if you use high gain, not surprising.
Honestly I'm not interested in flipping it, I have a lot of work on my hands already as is. I was just hoping it was an actual Squier that was modified to these specs. Ah well.
Thanks for input though, much appreciated.
