Spitfire tortoise guards anyone?

Post by Peter V. » Wed Feb 27, 2019 10:56 am

I would love to find a tortoise guard for my olympic white (a colour I'm not too keen on) Johnny Marr Jag. Judging by the gallery on their website those Spitfire tortoise guards do look awesome, but $250 + shipping & handling (to Germany) seem a bit steep. I get that the quality of the Spitfire tortoise guards seems to be second to none, though.

For $ 250 I might also get a refinish (which might the affect resell value, though, but I don't really care since the guitar is a keeper).

Any opinions / alternatives?

Best of the best. There is a 100+ page thread on here about tort, it speaks for itself.

I’ve gone down the tort rabbit hole. I spent a lot of money. I sold my early Spitfire at no loss recently. Vintage tort was actually cheaper in some cases. I love quality tort, dont get me wrong, but I’m ok with a guitar just being a guitar. :)

I've had multiple Spitfire guards. Once you recognize the shortcomings of most modern tort, the only answers are vintage, which tend to scare me off due to likely shrinkage, or Spitfire. My endorsement is pretty resounding, but would be even more full if the guards were about $75 cheaper.
great OSG deals with: ncarey13, skip.
great TGP deals with: drjoel, 12strings, Tim P, angrybandnerd, echobaseone, guitarpkr67, jcampbell331

Oh wait. You can't because you don't have 50 posts yet and can't see the "For Sale" section. Sorry man. Just make some good contributions and before you know it you'll be able to ask the Mods and see that stuff.

The Spitfire pricing model seems to be “the absolute most the market will bear,” but to be fair, the dude did dedicate himself to creating the best modern tort out there, which took a good bit of time and effort. I can’t help but think that at half the price, he’d sell three times as many, but that’s just a guess.

PS: That 100 page post used to just be about finding the best modern tort, then the Spitfire got in there with early development efforts and eventually guards for sale, and it got retitled and moved.
