Good point emphasizing that it's the 'knowing' that is the important bit here. Tuners are the least likely explanation for tuning problems. Although tuners may feel as if they could be 'slipping' when they have some slack during tuning, they rarely move once set. More likely explanations are nut binding, nut slots / first fret action too high, string winding technique, lack of string stretching, poor intonation.
