My main JM goes from full-bore to dark mush too quickly on the dial to clean up an amp set a little dirty with the guitar volume. Trying to decide which route to go with -
switch from 1k linear to 1k audio volume pot to see if the taper alone
add treble bleed
switch to 500k pots, '50s wiring (Emerson Custom harness)
switch to 1k pots, '50s wiring (EC harness)
Preferred mod to help with cleaning up with guitar volume - 500k, treble bleed, '50s wiring, combo?

Definitely try 50s wiring. It's such a tiny change and easily reversed.

.
Avoid 50's wiring!
I and others find that the 50s wiring creates an odd volume pot to tone pot interaction. Like turning down the tone pot drops the volume. Dropping the volume changes the tone pot. I found it much simpler to use a Treble Bleed for the problem the 50s wiring tries to solve, but the TB gives me expected control of the volume and tone knobs.
Choosing the part values for a TB is important, see this work here http://guitarnuts2.proboards.com/thread ... ed-circuit
Try a different series of tone caps to spread out your tone band on the pot you have first. Then swap pots to experiment.

I can't recall a thread with TB JM experiences but I'm guessing there was one or more.
AFAIK the Am Pro is the only JM that has a stock TB ... but it has 500k pots and V-mod pickups (which may have influenced the component values) ..
https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Orig ... 7-2016.pdf
Rothstein puts this 1000pF (0.001uF) /150k TB on JMs ..
Most TB circuits fall into 3 styles (mF here means uF) ..

There is also this little variable TB for tweaking the effect ...
