Instead of redundant phase switches, use one switch for an EQ cap of some sort. Either low pass or high pass for even more flexibility in your sound!

I could put in a low pass filter on a switch, for quick colour changes or something... hmmm

I should have it finished by the end of the week so I’ll do a little demo once it’s done, can’t wait!

Cheers

Sweet! I agree those pickups and trem on an old guitar. I actually really love the way the trem feels and sounds!

There are lots of issues with the guitar, but it's mostly to do with the neck and tuners.

I look forward to the demo!

Exciting news, a very cheap teisco tulip guitar popped up locally as a “as is for repair”
Image
The pick up works but the pots have seized. Easy fix, but the plan is to take the pickup out, install it in the jag as a middle pickup and change the switching/wiring to accomodate, channeling those classic multi pickup teiscos, and adding a little more flexibility.
I plan on hotrodding the teisco as well :p you’ll see ;)

Matte Black Mahgony Teisco Jaguar - Almost finished!

Post by nihilandvoid » Mon Oct 29, 2018 3:46 am

Updates! It’s almost done! Installed the third pickup, nothing is wired up yet but I couldn’t resist a mock-up. True to the teisco vibe everything isn’t quite perfect, but with the one test string, it will be a killer player!!! I kinda winged it on a few things but they turned out to be spot on

The teisco tulip that kindly donated the middle pickup will be hot rodded soon too, but I’ll do a seperate post for that :p

I thought the middle pickup would look weird with the other ones, but seeing as it's just about the same size, that really works. More than just works actually, that looks great!

Man this is looking fantastic. I can't wait to hear a clip of how it sounds!

Weird pickups in jags are kind of my thing, so these Teisco pickups are right up my alley.

Things I have in completed or ongoing project Jags: Guyatone goldfoils, Burns mini tri-sonics, '61 Bass VI pickups (the ones with the baseplates and metal surrounds), filtertrons, HB-sized alnico-pole P90s...no Teiscos yet, but I could be convinced :D

Well.... ITS FINISHED!
Image
Image
and it’s awesome
It has little quirks, the bridge phase switch doesn’t quite work properly (sometimes) and I somehow managed to wire the tone pot backwards (which coincidentally enough is how teiscos were often wired) but it sounds killer and the tonal variations are really useful and unique. The mahogany body is quite heavy in comparisons to a normal alder/ash body, and I think it adds to how resonant and lively the guitar feels/sounds. The bowtie bridge on an offset is a secret sauce kind of thing, it seems to add more sustain and clarity.

The tailpiece in true teisco style throws the whole thing out of tune, which is ok since I rarely use it.

I’ll do sound demos soon for everybody!

That's so awesome. Can't wait for the clips.

What gauge strings did you use, and how is the intonation? How many cents is it off at the 12th fret? Even though I play a lot of acoustic guitar, fixed-intonation bridges on electrics scare me for some reason.

I’m using 11’s with a wound g, and the intonation is pretty good actually, better than I expected, not spot on but definitely better than I thought. Solid bar bridges in my experience have always sounded the best.

Oh man, that looks so rad! I love everything about it haha.
Did you have to shim the neck at all to accommodate for the bowtie bridge? Got a strat project that has a (very poorly) blocked off trem bridge that I hate, plus due to the partscaster nature of the thing the neck sits further in the pocket than the original and theres not enough room left to intonate :fp:
But regardless of any of that, great job. Could see Jamie from the kills rocking it.
Sound demo plz!

I’m working on mahogany jazzmaster body. From a pro paintjob guy i’ve got the advice to use some kind of grainfiller or wood stopper stuff to ‘close’ the wood from sucking up the paint. And than apply the base coat. Did you use anything like this? because I love the result. looks natural en raw.

no grain fill on mine, only because i wanted the grain to show through for a textured look (which works great with matte black)
usually the only reason you need to grain fill is to achieve a uniform finish, which was not my intention :P
