Best place to get pots, switches, jacks, etc. for Jazzmaster

Post by Riff Magnum » Tue Sep 18, 2018 9:21 pm

So I'm putting together a Warmoth Jazzmaster and I'm wanting to wire it up basically like the Rothstein STB super mod. Dual volume, PTB tone stack, series parallel. http://www.guitar-mod.com/mm5/merchant. ... JM_STB_KIT
I was able to score a set of new Travis Bean JM 500 pickups and Kevin (the owner/builder) told me I should use 500k pots. I've contacted Rothstein to see if they'd substitute the normal 1m pots for 500k, but I haven't heard back. It also seems like the DIY kits are always sold out anyways, but the prewired kits are in stock. Go figure.
Anyways, I'm really having a hard time finding one place online that has all the parts in the Rothstein diagram, especially when it comes to the reverse taper roller pot. I feel like I've hit up all the usual suspects and now i'm just trolling Amazon hoping to get lucky.

Maybe some of the stuff will be at Mouser?

I think it may be possible to use regular audio reverse taper pots for the thumb wheels. at least I remember reading somewhere that you totally can. I know the standard ones have a longer shaft, but just a little bit of elbow grease and you can get by with regular reverse audio pots.

Thanks!! I'll check those out.
I lurked for a month or so before joining and i've gone through a lot of threads. As popular as Jazzmasters are, I'd think there would be way more options out there, especially when people are obviously selling out of essential build parts.

While I have never been much of a guitar pickup style modder, I have been in here for more than 10 years and I’ve never seen discussions of the ‘Rothstein Super Mod.’
That’s not to say that it’s bad or anything, but I suspect the lack of parts is due to the scarcity of demand.

This is true, although Reverb did a big writeup about this particular JM mod about a year ago (which is where i heard about it) so I figured it wouldn't be such a pain in the ass. Maybe the exposure is why they're "sold out"
Hopefully Rothstein will get back to me eventually. I also PM'd a forum member who said he had some extra pots and the proper reamed roller knobs.
The fact that they have the parts in stock for prewired assemblies but not for DIY kits is what has me confused.

Probably because there's little profit selling small orders of low-value parts to hobbyists, while there are plenty of folks happy to pay big prices for that small collection of parts once they're soldered together.

There’s a guy on Reverb that can wire anything up for you. He sells custom harnesses. John Weinstein’s in Little Elm, TX. As a bonus, he’s a Texan. He wired me up a vintage JM wiring with vintage parts and it’s beautiful.

The DIY kit is $120, so not exactly small potatoes. The fully assembled harness is around $160 if you supply the pick guard and/or pickups. Seems like a better business model to just sell as many parts as possible, instead of having to pay techs to assemble and solder, although I bet they make a decent profit on pickup and pick guard markups. They seem to have a relationship with Novak, FWIW.

Hell yeah!! I'm gonna check him out.
I got a really good (and affordable!!) tech/luthier that I use herein town and he's gonna put the whole thing together and set it up, so I really just need the parts. Good lead Tele!! Cheers!!

Edit: Can't seem to find any shop on reverb using his name. You got a link?

I had his name wrong: Wainwright Custom Guitars is his shop on reverb. Here’s a link to order a wiring harness. Be sure to contact him first about what you want and pricing.
