NGD: Thinline Jaguar Build (Saylor, Mastery, Decoboom, Warmoth, Sunday Handwound)
Just finished up a thinline Jaguar build that started off with a Decoboom pickguard that I picked up cheap from The Gear Page.
Body is a Saylor thinline with spruce top and alder back/sides.
The neck is from Warmoth. It's a Mustang/Jaguar neck, maple with rosewood fretboard, standard thin profile, 6150 stainless steel frets (first time I've used SS frets), MOP dot inlays, Tusq XL nut. I finished this with a few coats of Tru Oil and it feels really nice. Used Hipshot staggered locking open back tuners with the universal mounting plate.
I finished off the body in Tru Oil. I think around 15 coats with some light sanding between to take off any high spots.
Fitting everything for screw hole drilling. Check out the Decoboom pickguard! Also using a Mastery bridge and vibrato.
The pickups are from Sunday Handwound. Tim knocked it out of the park yet again. These are Alnico 4 for the EAD string and Alnico 2 for the GBE strings. The bridge pickup is 6.1k tapped with an 8.2k hot tap. I set the single upper switch to toggle between the different bridge pickup output levels.
The neck pickup is 5.9k with a separate claw ground for 4 way switch wiring. The switch is wired as neck, series, parallel, bridge.
I used CTS 1meg pots, Switchcraft jack, and a Mojotone Vitamin T .022 capacitor.
Most everything installed. I'm using a Reverend banjo armrest, which I find comfortable on slab style bodies and also looks nice.
And finally all put together. Things are settling in and playing nicely. Just working on final set up now! Also ordered a black switch tip to see if that looks better. I wanted to use a Tele top hat style, but it bumped into the screws making it not consistently selecting the neck pickup.

aside from the sanding between truoil coats, did you have to do any sanding initially, out of the box ?

Looks great. What are your impressions of the stainless frets so far?

Saylor bodies are sanded to 150 grit I think. It definitely need some smoothing before I started the tru oil but it wasn’t bad.
So far so good on the stainless frets!

Loving this!
Nicely done.
Not to put words in your mouth, but did you say it started out as a pickguard and then you built this all up? (please say yes)

Yes! Found the pickguard at a good price and worked off of that for the rest of the build.smalltownsongs wrote: ↑Tue Sep 18, 2018 10:34 amLoving this!
