High end paint / refin shops

Post by DeathJag » Mon Aug 13, 2018 4:45 am

First post, please excuse me if this has been answered already! I did search but that was kind of complicated.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a high quality paint shop? I’m gonna need a jaguar body stripped and refinished in a matte or flat color. I will pay top dollar for a factory-like finish!

Thanks!

Ive heard good things about Mario Guitars (AKA Guitar Mill) He does nice Nitro jobs and can make them look like new or relic, I'm sure he can do Poly as well. Ive used MJT, but they only do relic stuff. my black Jazzmaster body did not arrive super shiny, perfectly buffed out, no scratches, even with the closet clean option. So it just kind of depends on what you are looking for.

I think MJT does some of the best work available for the price, and they make great custom paint jobs too, pretty much anything you can dream up!

Not the last time I checked, and I wouldn't consider them 'high end'.

Guys like Marty Bell or Stike at Rowyco (both mentioned upthread) are in a different league altogether.

Agreed. I have two MJT-finished guitars, and they're fantastic at what they do, but they only do the "MJT thing." Their finishes wear and check incredibly easily (which makes their relic jobs easier for them, and allows their guitars to accumulate natural wear more quickly). That's what people go to them for. They do fantastic solid colours and hit-or-miss bursts (most are misses IMO).

I'm a happy, repeat customer of theirs, but they're not where you go for the "factory-like finish" the OP asked for. A new Marty Bell nitro finish is going to look flawless and hold up very well over time, with natural wear accumulating at a similar pace to a vintage Fender (read: extremely slowly, if taken care of).

Yes Mr. Ebene085 a slow-aging brand new finish is great!

Guitar Mill’s quote was $750 for the body + neck and stripping off the body’s existing CAS coat. Standing by for the Marty Bell quote. I want a matte finish and one place already said they don’t offer any!

Don't know about Marty Bell, but I'm very satisfied with the metallic custom color jazzmaster that Guitar Mill made me.

Oh good to hear! May I ask how long your paint job took? Guitar Mill just got back to me with a 10 - 12 week turnaround! (Seems long but then again I have no reference and I want it done right!)

Well, I had them do extra routing and installed thimbles and strap buttons...but it took way too long. Like 6 months. I wasn’t in a hurry because I didn’t have all the parts I needed anyway, so I didn’t care, but it was long.

Oh yeah that's way long! Glad to hear it came out ok.

By the way people - Marty Bell is false advertising. Dude wrote me back saying this:

"I'm currently booked up through Sept and not accepting more jobs, you might try Pat Wilkins Painting.thanx for the inquiry.
Marty"

BOGUS DUDE! Take the website down or put up a notice! Also, why not just tell me it's going to take 6 weeks longer? That’s bad business, forget this guy.

Funny thing is if Marty had bothered to get details, he would have known that he wouldn’t even get my stuff until October! Because I have to wait for the neck to be ready.

Anyone use this Pat Wilkins fellow?

I'm really happy with the recent finish I had done by Guitarpaintguys. They do poly finishes and have tons of color options.
