Having sold my Jazzmaster’s the last two years, the bug has bitten me again... I bought a Squier VM neck super cheap on eBay, and whilst perusing found a cheap UK build ash body, complete with trem, bridge and supposedly an AVRI pickguard. The price was too good to refuse. Not so sure on the pickguard now as conveniently written in pen on the back it says AVRI pickguard but it does look very reminscent of the tort stock guard on my old Custom Shop Fender. Anyway here’s a rough picture as is:

Anyway the body turned up but has an acrylic finish not yet lacquered, it’s a mix of white with yellow paint on top and I am not a fan. I am set on Fiesta Red with matching headstock, but I am unsure on whether to:
Roughly sand the body and paint straight over with the white still on.
Try and sand down to the wood, I don’t fancy using paint stripper.
Sell the body for as much as possible and buy from scratch an unfinished body from the internet.
I’m probably going to just paint straight over and see how this turns out, I’ve manaed to remove the copper shielding which was glued in on the body, the holes drilled for the pickguard don’t line up either...
Anyway, here are some more pictures:

Re: Jazzmaster build
I'm pretty sure we were both eyeing up the same body on eBay (I ended up going the get-one-from-scratch route).
The current paint would be a good key for another colour, but it doesn't look like he used any sanding sealer/grain filler on this (or didn't do a great job of it) given the grain in that bottom photo, so that'll show under a new colour still.
It's still a bargain given everything that came with it! Fiesta red'll look great with that guard.

I really love that yellow! It sounds like it looked better in the pic, though. I’m in the same boat as you were. I have a VMJM neck that is in need of a body.
The paint looks great. Is it rattle can?

The yellow white body looked a lot better in pictures than reality, I was hoping for a 60s gloss with UV yellowing. Sadly it was anything but, but a good starting place for the colour coat.
Yeah it’s a rattle can fiesta red, from a uk company called northwest guitars. Probably the best spray I’ve used so far.

Applied a decal, giving this a few more days or another week or two before spraying some clear coats.
