New tone pot for Squier Deluxe JM?

Post by Digital Larry » Thu Jun 14, 2018 5:54 am

I am pretty happy with the sounds emanating from my new CAR Squier Deluxe JM. However the tone pot leaves a bit to be desired. I find myself setting it about 3 or 4 to take excessive crispies off the top when playing clean. There's not much action between 4 and 10. I'm guessing that this could be due to the "taper". Also I know that I could make the pickup overall less bright by using a lower value volume pot, but at least for the moment I am not looking for that.

Advice on getting a more even response from the tone control?

Thanks,

DL

I had a similar issue with my build, and I solved it with genuine CTS pots. I’ve found that cheap pots don’t lend themselves well to smooth tapers. My problem wasn’t so extreme, though, so this may not be the answer you’re looking for.

I believe that the standard JM main tone control cap is 0.03uF. Or you might have a 0.022uF or 0.1uF that are on some JMs.

"As the cap gets smaller, the minimum tone knob settings gets less dark. "

Given that you like to 'darken' (high cut) your tone a little as standard, you might want to try a larger valued cap to give the pot more range down to (more) fully dark, eg if you have 0.03uF go to 0.047uF.

Also, if you have 1meg volume and tone pots, switching to 500k would make the guitar less bright.

Those approaches are probably easier / more predictable than trying to figure out if a different taper would improve things.
