Musicmaster parts build (still needs a name)

Post by Ohioisonfire » Thu Feb 22, 2018 3:49 pm

Today I would like to introduce my latest project. My entire budget has already been spent so this is gonna be a slow build, I'll buy parts and post updates as I can. Here's what I have so far:

-Fender 70's Music-master Bass body
-Fender mexico neck, with a very unusual heel (which is good for this build).
-Fender neck plate and screws

I need help deciding what the guitar is gonna look like in the end. Also before anyone says "don't mess up that vintage body", look at it. I'm between a few different bridge/trem options right now:

1. Jazzmaster trem and bridge (current favorite)
2. Mustang trem and bridge
3. Bigsby B5 and Jazzmaster bridge
4. Some fixed bridge like a tele half bridge or something similar

Hopefully these pictures will work (first post with pics).

I don't really have anything to add, other than that body has seen some shit.

You're making a guitar out of this, I assume?

Yeah I'm making a guitar. I was inspired by a build I saw on reverb a while ago that did a similar thing. I've been waiting for a properly molested MM bass body since.

Looks really cool. I hope you keep that finish. Seems like the Jazzmaster trem would cover the old bridge area perfectly.

Definitely going to keep the finish, at least for a while. It's so ugly and story filled I love it.

The jazzmaster trem would pretty much cover that nasty old bridge area perfectly. That's one of the main reasons it's my top choice currently. I know this is gonna be an ugly duckling but I'd like to try and avoid the nastiness of that area being visible.

I cannot for the life of me figure what that rout was for. Ain’t no pickup shaped like that!

Also, is the body deep enough for a Jazz/Jag trem?

I don't know the answer, but I feel like it being a bass body means its gotta be a bit thicker than the average music master style electric guitar. Hopefully as thick as a JM.

Worst comes to worst a JM hardtail plate could be cool.

Yeah that pickup cavity is some kinda messed up. I'm really hoping the pick-guard will cover it...

As for the concerns about body thickness: from the research (this website and google) I have done, it looks like a conventional Jazz/Jag trem route will fit by only a few mm. The normal guitar music masters were usually 1.5" from the numbers I've seen and the Jazz/Jag trem cavity is 1.375". It seems like the spring is the deepest part of the trem and the only area that needs the full depth, so the rest can be much shallower. I've used my paint skills to make a rough idea of what I'm talking about:

Yeah that looks amazing and similar to my end goal. Part of the difference with mine is the 25.5" scale neck will push the bridge and trem a lot closer to the edge of the body. Im gonna use the bass Pickguard, at least for now.

Does anyone have a pdf/template/tracing or anything like that for either a mustang bass pickguard or a musicmaster bass pickguard? Getting closer to finishing this but I'm gonna need to make myself a custom guard.

Also I've decided to go with the JM bridge/vibrato, so I'm gonna take the vibrato off of my MIJ JM and then just upgrade that guitar to an AV one..
