Classic Player JM mods?

Post by ryanfears » Tue Feb 20, 2018 8:08 pm

So I'm planning on getting a Classic Player JM, and I have two important questions regarding modding the guitar.

1. I learned that the stock pots are 1meg. I am planning to swap the bridge pickup with a Fralin steel-poled hum-cancelling pickup. Will this be too bright with the 1megs?

2. What are the best locking tuners that will fit the guitar without drilling it?

"Too bright" is completely subjective. A fralin steel pole pickup is already less bright than my vintage Jaguar and Jazzmaster pickups, and I like those just fine with 1meg pots. I'd personally rather have extra treble and the option to roll it off, than to have less treble with the knobs maxed out, but that's just me.

I put 1meg pots in pretty much everything except Stratocasters and Telecasters. I especially love 1meg pots with P90s.

As mbene085 said, I'd rather have the brightness and roll it off when I don't need it.

Hmm . . . vintage locking tuners with screws inline . . . . Gotoh has the SD91 series https://g-gotoh.com/international/produ ... -mg-t.html that might fit but you may have to ream out the holes to 10 mm . . . I think those might be the only ones that come close, everything else has screws to the side of the tuner or needs pin holes and you'll need to enlarge the holes in the headstock for almost all of those as well.
When thinking about any advice given always ask yourself "why would (s)he know more than I do".
