Ocean Mist Jazzmaster-ish build (upgraded kit guitar)
I started with a Jazzmaster-ish kit.
Here it is mocked up just after it arrived:
I kept the neck nice and simple at first... just a quick clear coat with a rub down with steel wool after it dried to make it a bit more satin:
I have always loved Sonic Blue and Surf Green, so when I saw a rattle can that was almost like a cross between them, it was a no-brainer:
The kit came with p-90s and a tort pickguard... I actually liked the tort on that Ocean Mist more than I thought I would:
This is how it looked mocked up after most of the finishing was done:
Once the kit itself was finished I was pretty happy:
But it was so much better than I expected that I decided to keep going and try and make it REALLY nice.
First I replaced the TOM bridge and vibrato with the one I had taken off my JMJM when I upgraded it. Next I added a set of Tonerider 90's instead of the cheap-o ones the kit came with (although they sounded better than I expected). I also bit the bullet and tried painting the pickguard to try and get the white guard I wanted rather than the tort the kit came with (it doesn't fit a real JM gurad). It turned out pretty good, but I have found someone that can make me a custom white guard so I will be getting that soon.
The final mod was to replace the kit rosewood neck with a vintage tint satin maple fretboard neck from fleabay. It was just a cheap neck, but it feels great! I am REALLY happy with how it turned out:
The downside is that it has opened up a whole new world of GAS!
I have a non-reverse Firebird body routed for a JM vibrato from Rosser guitars ordered... this is gonna be a slippery slope...

The only thing that stands out is the back end of the top of the pickguard (bottom left corner in the last picture). It's very square in that area on top, and that area in the back. Maybe a bit of sanding/reshaping to curve it to blend a little more? Otherwise I like it!!

Nice to see a vision come together!
One thing my eye told me to tell you is that a pair of cream cupcake knobs would really unify the color scheme!

Ooooh... those are purtty. I actually already got some cream strat type knobs to replace the weird white ones that came with it, but those look far nicer!Horsefeather wrote: ↑Wed Jan 24, 2018 1:34 amNice to see a vision come together!

Yeah, that's the one! It's great in that it looks different under different situations... sometimes more blue, others more green.tribal_scythe wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 10:02 amLooks awesome! What kind of spray can is that? Is that he 2-in-1 paint primer Rustoleum?

Totally. I always wondered if I could use that stuff on a guitar- did you use any clear coat?tommycarlos wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 11:15 amYeah, that's the one!
