Paint and graphite powder, time to make some shielding paint. One part of each, and mix. :w00t:

Image

So, as you can see on a previous picture, there was already some shielding paint, just not everywhere. This is why I got silver paint: the graphite powder will darken it, but a light shade will remain light enough so I can see if I didn't miss a spot covering that existing black paintjob. A few layers are enough, it's quick to dry, so in a couple of hours you're done... And you don't need to make it look nice, I certainly didn't, it'll be hidden anyway. Also, in my case, I'll be using humbuckers, so the shielding should have a minimal impact. And you can see the Hipshot bridge, which definitely look nice and sturdy (and heavy).

If you're interested about making your own shielding paint, a good read: http://www.instructables.com/id/Conductive-Paint/

Nobody seems interested by this build, but anyway, pickguard received! :w00t:

So, tomorrow, I'll start giving it some life... :)

plenty interested.
where did you come up with the shielding recipe? that's new to me.
(Christopher, also)
I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

Question, what's with that round hole in the block between the pickup cavities?
When thinking about any advice given always ask yourself "why would (s)he know more than I do".

I really like how this is coming together. That pickguard with the combo of the body color, bridge design and pickups is gonna look really nice.

Did it on a friend's guitar some years ago. We followed a different but similar recipe than the one on the experiment I posted above, but it did noticeably reduce the hum on his Strat. We didn't do a comparison with copper tape shielding (which I assume would work better for noisey guitars, but it's 1/ more expensive, 2/ more time-comsuming to apply, and 3/ way less fun), but I happened to have a Strat-like guitar shielded with aluminium tape (that was all I could find at that time), and the graphite paint did a better job. I never compared it to "proper" shielding paint either.

For this one, I followed the Instructible poster's advice: one part graphite, on part paint (quantity, not weight). Be careful, graphite powder is very volatile, avoid breathing or mixing too hard, or it's going to make a mess... Do not try to crush pencil leads for that reason; powder is cheap and should be available at any place that sells locksmith tools, got mine at a shoe & key repair stall in a supermarket. You can also find very fine copper powder (on eBay, for instance), which will work even better; however, it's particularily toxic, and it's not worth the health risk. Any cheap acrylic paint will do, but I advise you to stay on the greyscale since the graphite will add a dark grey tint to it, it could turn ugly with color.

On this guitar, I'll use humbuckers, that wasn't always the plan, but I still wanted to do it as my previous experiment seemed to have enough impact on the hum. Though, of course, it won't allow me to hear how effective it is. But other people seemed to be very satisfied with it.

Tool mark for the CNC, if I remember correctly.

Wiring? Check. Well... Not at first. My soldering iron wasn't very cooperative, my solders were crappy, and something was wrong. Day 2 of soldering: it worked.

Image

But... Then I faced issue numero uno: pickups are top mounted, hence the quick connectors, but the cables make it tricky to fit everything inside, so I decided to mount the pickups on the pickguard. It'll allow me to shorten the cables, and make everything neater. Drilled a few holes, used the mounting system that came with the TV Jones, and then... Issue numéro deux: the pickup cavity isn't deep enough. Why did I forget to check that before?... Anyway, I improvised a little (very disposable) hand-router jig for my Dremel.

The result is not the cleanest, but that'll do.

Now, back on track, hoping to be done with unplanned work...

So, this was the quick mockup I first did on PhotoShop:

And this is the result:

Still have to set it up... Other wise, plays like a charm, and quiet as hell.

Oh man, that looks so good. The blueish gray body and the trans gold pick guard is such a stellar combo. And the filtertrons really class it up. Congrats on finishing a great project.
