1966 Jazzmaster neck clone?

Post by Kadenray » Mon Dec 11, 2017 2:50 pm

Who could make a Jazzy neck with 1966 specs? one with blocks, binding, vintage radius, vintage frets, and the bigger CBS headstock.

Musikraft can do that. Just specced out one such neck a couple of weeks ago. Haven't pulled the trigger yet since I'm still debating stainless vintage sized frets (so that I don't lose height from wear and subsequent dressings).

Fender Japan has made those necks for their double-bound Stratocaster model. But Musikraft would be easier (and cheaper).

Musikraft seems a good option.

In case you'd be tempted, I would stay away from those sold on ebay Australia (jagnjazzmaster). They are beautiful and well made, but out of specs.
I have one that was supposed to be 7"25 radius, but it's more than 12" (which is the highest radius gauge I have). The heel is also slightly too large to fit in a standard american neck pocket. I ended up using it on my VMJM, which was not what I intended to, and I'm pretty sure I had to sand the neck pocket a little to make it fit.

Nice, I never saw the option for a Jazzmaster neck with CBS headstock on their site. Did you just email them the specifics?

I am unaware of any difference between a CBS strat headstock and CBS JM headstock. The pre-CBS JM headstock is in-between the two Strats, but the measurements I have found online point toward CBS headstocks being the same across the two models. Just the decals and the neck heel stamps differ AFAIK...

Does anyone have info to the contrary? I have never seen a "CBS JM" neck...just "CBS" or "CBS strat" since they seem to be the same until you finish them.

If I'm not mistaken, Kadenray is talking about aftermarket headstock options.
You're talking about vintage headstocks.
Or is it just me?

My point was about the idea of "aftermarket CBS JM" necks being the same as "aftermarket CBS strat" necks. Same neck heel, same scale length, and to my knowledge, same headstock profile.

I.e. ordering musikraft's "2-piece CBS strat" neck with B&B, 7.25 radius and small frets *is* your reproduction CBS JM neck, since none of the aftermarket necks come with a decal or neck heel stamp anyway (which are the original markings that differentiated the two).

after looking at the cbs strat neck a little more, i think you are right. can anyone here confirm whether there is any difference between the cbs strat headstock and the cbs jazzmaster headstock?
