Yep. The black ones are widely available from multiple sources, probably due to their use on amps. Not so for the aged white ones.

I'd like to entertain a more interesting conspiracy theory.

Maybe one involving a disgruntled designer who wanted to see aged white knobs on a build but was shot down, now he spends every day and night buying out every source of aged white knobs so that no one can experience the joy he tried to bring to the world. And we won't find out about it until one day years from now when he dies and his relatives find storage unit after storage unit filled with the knobs still in packages, and it makes one of those weird news stories that gets picked up by all the 11pm local news, but is otherwise missed by the general public. And guitar forums are like, "Oh."
