For those who changed the pickups to their Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster

Post by idropinus » Thu Dec 07, 2017 9:56 am

Can anyone tell me if the pickup covers are glued to the stock pickups, or can I re-use them for the new pickups? Or do I have to buy also new pickup covers?

FWIW, my VM Bass VI had glued-on covers, but I was still able to pry them off carefully without damaging the covers or the pickups.

Did you use a particular process for the glue? So you say that they will be re-usable

I can't say for sure that yours will be the same as mine, since my covers on the VI are Jag-sized and therefore smaller/probably harder to crack. I just lifted up one corner and applied firm, steady pressure - I didn't yank sharply on it. It took a bit of effort but it came off cleanly. I could see the dot of glue on the top of the bobbin - maybe 3/32" diameter (or between 2 and 3mm for us metric folks). It wasn't tough. Did it on all 3 pickups without a problem.

I have one of these pickups on my custom telemaster in neck-position. Wanted to age the pickup cover and ran into the problem of the glue between them. As stated before, they are glued but can be separated with careful prying. I didn't have any specific way, just tried to gently push the magnets down and pry the pickup cover from the side.

Using a hair-dryer on them for a few moments to warm up the glue could help.

I had a set of J Mascis Jazzmaster pickups and they weren't glued on. I wonder if it's just an inconsistency with the production if some of them are?

I remove glued covers by simultaneously pushing down on multiple pole pieces with something like a screwdriver, haven't broken anything yet, but it's always a hairy scary moment

The pickups on my Squier Mascis were not glued either - I bought a second set a year ago and they too were not glued/showed no signs of glue

The Duncan Designed Squier VM pickups were those with glue..

They were not glued on mine. Covers came of with absolutely no effort as soon as I unscrewed the pickups.
