What coils can fit in CP Jag

Post by airtom » Tue Nov 07, 2017 9:53 am

I am building an offset with a Fender RI CP HH Jag. Since the coil routing in for Humbuckers can I fit an original Jag single coil in one of the coil cutouts? I know I will have to probably make a custom pickguard, but will the coil fit appropriately in the pocket? My plan, I think, is to have a humbucker in the neck and a Jag single in the bridge and make the Humbucker a split coil. Not sure about parallel / series or phase changing. I have a bunch of research to do as this is my first build project. Thanks for suggestions, info, and encouragement. Tom

This is a Fender Classic Player RI Jaguar Classic HH. Whew that's a mouthful. It is routed for Humbuckers. Anybody know what all coils will fit in the routing? I'll figure the pickguard and electronics as I go. Anybody?

Are you asking about pickups?

If it is routed for humbuckers, any humbucker sized pickup will fit in it. Most Minihumbuckers will probably fit. Most modern gold foils will fit.

You can usually find dimensions of pickups on websites you purchase them from. Or, if they are standard, you can probably find the dimensions online. If you don't already, get a decent set of calipers to take a good measurement.

What won't fit without some work: P90s, widerange humbuckers, Telecaster bridge pickup, most Fender style single coils and lipstick pickups would probably be a bit too long, but depends on the route.

Here are the dimensions of a Jaguar pickup:

If you center the Jaguar pickup directly in the route for the humbucker, it might fit. It might be close enough you can take care of it with a chisel or file.

The new American Professional jag's wiring has the Johnny Marr-style 4-way switch with series/parallel, and a new phase switch on the upper plate.

You could add the HB coil split as a push-pull on one of the pots, or use the Marr-style two-switch upper plate and add the switch to the phase switch there.

Thanks! I kinda like the Johnny Marr type 4 position switch. My Jag is already routed for HH so I'm going to stay with Humbucker sized pickups...don't know which ones yet. Coil splitting and Phase switching!!!! Wow. Boggles the mind with tonal possibilities. Believe it or not I've been kind of leaning towards the GFS http://www.guitarfetish.com/KP--Dream-1 ... 23121.html. I have been listening to so many reviews and you tube videos that my head is gonna asplode. Also their lipstick humbucker http://www.guitarfetish.com/KP--GFS-Pro ... 21831.html sounds interesting. It's going to be a process to sort thru everything and in the end I think I'm probably going to just pick a dozen and throw a dart. I'll probably never know the difference between them. Thanks for all of the replies and I really love the schematics! Tom

I tried a few GFS pickups, back when they were new on the market there was lots of internet hype. Their "retrotron" humbuckers were very lackluster. Finally bit the bullet and ordered TV Jones pickups, which were night-and-day superior. And ironically, by hesitating to buy TVJ's because they were "too expensive", I threw more money away in the end by ordering cheap, crappy pickups, and then replacing those with the ones I actually wanted. Ordered some Mean 90's and was equally disappointed.

Their stuff looks good on paper, but like most things, you get what you pay for. I wasn't impressed.

Well, sitting at work today in between jobs I have really taken a liking to the Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz neck sound. They sound very nice through the computer. I like the tonal qualities of the JB. Could also like the 59 neck as well. Not like an original Jaguar, but then mine is a CP HH so it's not anything like an original Jag anyway. Really diggin on the JB's. Tom

The JB is a great distortion humbucker.

I have nothing good to say about the Jazz neck. People seem to like them as a combo.

Put a StagMag in the neck.

Not familiar with the StagMag. I'll have to research that a bit. I'm still working on figuring out what to order for the Johnny Marr wiring and switching scheme. I'd love to just buy a kit that has everything already sourced in good quality components. I have looked at Tone Shapers kits but don't see exactly what I want in their inventory. I am waiting for a reply from them about a custom assembly. Thanks for all your ideas! Tom
