matching your back-up to your #1

Post by soggy mittens » Sun Oct 29, 2017 5:51 pm

ok so this is the issue, when changing guitar between songs some guitars sound really really different and have you wanting to make adjustments to amp settings etc. It is nice to have a different guitar give new tonz but sometimes it's too much.

right now my #1 jazz has antiquity iis with 1meg pots and I want to make a new back-up with vintage 65 pickups, I've read they can be brighter should I stick with 1meg pots or match them with 500meg pots? Some sound difference is ok just as long as I'm not wanting to dime amp settings with a guitar change, which pots would you recommend for this?

Why don't you just put the same pickups and pots in the back up if you want it to sound the same?

Might be a good application for an EQ pedal, on/off between the two guitars.
remember / to kick it over

geezzz I wish I could afford another set of Aiis at the minute but alas I shouldn't even be spending monies on anything right now. xD I can get a set of vintage 65s for pretty cheap tho and this backup may only get used on one or two songs per set. I should have mentioned as well that I plan to only have a volume pot in there, no tone, no rhythm switches, just pickups, pickup selector and volume knob, input jack. And I think I'd be lucky to fit another pedal on my board. xD
I am leaning towards the 500 audio taper to be honest but would like to make sure it's not going to be a huge jump in tone between guitars as I've never heard the difference in person before, especial between these different pickups. Plus I like the idea of it sounding a little bit different, just not so much that I want to dime my amp.

EDIT: how it currently looks, just a squier, will be putting a Japanese trem on it, bone nut, and yes that is a matt black pg, accidental order but I actually like it. xD

I don't know if I've ever seen a matte black guard on a burst, but I like it!!

Yeah looks like an aluminum guard in the pic right. Even better in person! Going to put the volume pot where the tone pot goes, this will be a beater/smasher for the more visceral end of set rock songs. 8)
