1969 reissue mij mustang repainted Ocean turquoise (new pics posted!)

Post by palesnow67 » Tue Oct 24, 2017 8:38 pm

Hey guys! In a couple weeks im gonna be refinishing my originally olympic white 69 reissue stang and wanna show you guys the process.
The reason im doing it is because there is a lot of ugly dings from a strap with a metal adjuster not plastic and it made really bad long oval cracks/dents that ive always hated. Also the red fake tort is ridiculously ugly so that's been having to go for a long time! Getting a MOP pickguard for him and some nice 65 reissue black switches with the brass in them (anything brass is always my favorite :) glad i found some online!) and black pickup covers. I'm gonna go ahead and put the jb jr black pickup ive had since my kurtz tone days (it's my first offset, got it when i was 16! saved up the full 800 bucks for it used for 8 months at my first job) and keep the neck original, but with the 65 reissue black cover.

I found a guy on an offset forum on fb that has a nonprofit organization for guitars (which is cool in itself) And told me he would help me refinish it for just the cost of the materials (such a cool guy!).
I'll be getting reranch shell pink paint and he is going to finish it over in poly for me which is my preferred clear coat.
Now the thing is that im going to be sanding the clear coat off for him and the headstock for a matching paint job but ive never done this before. I have every level of wet sandpaper for the job. I'd love any advice on this part!
Thanks guys, super excited for it and to show you guys the process!

I'll be of course posting before and after pics too ;)

The reranch forum definitely has refinishing guides. There are threads here about stripping as well. Might want to consult before starting.

Order pickguard, switches and covers.
Says it comes in on Nov 2.

Have to put paint on hold because car needs tires and brakes.
Should have project completed in a couple.onthes or more tho. But for now I'll have pics of before and after parts installed for you guys once they come in :)

Sorry for taking so long. Working lots, and it took a couple days to put a tire on my car with no luck, so put in the spare just for now.

Sorry for late post. Here are the before and after pics i promised ;)

Trying to show you the dents. hard to get with camera..

Original 1964 duo sonic brass shielding (im OBSESSED with brass shielding...)
Getting ready to get everything together//

And everything fit perfectly!
The pickguard was a bit off, but its so close I got extremely lucky it fit and more than happy about it!
Had to fit some screws in sideways, but it worked so no complaints

Close up of the new 65 reissue switches with brass shielding (of course... i swear it DOES sound better to me)
sorry for it being so blurry... i tried okay!!

The top picture is more accurate to how it looks in real life, the bottom one makes it look almost brand new hahha

So in the end I soldered everything with the original black and white cloth wiring with original switching so nothing special.( sorry for no pics, i was in a hurry and was swearing because the solder kept melting down on the posts, which was really annoying. I only once wired something in the wrong spot and quickly fixed it. nothing too fun to watch, well maybe for us haha my bad).
Overall I love this guitar so much more!! I swear it sounds and feels better now, especially looks for me at least :)
My first mustang and offset is even more special. 16 yo me would be so happy, i always wanted a mop pickguard on it since i got it

Now it just needs to be repainted!

Of course ending selfie to show the guitar better in a mirror pic, that;s kinda my thing at the end of guitar posts haha
(p.s. right click to open into a new page and zoom in to get a really great detail of it, i use a dslr with over 4000x4000 pic quality)
