To plate or not to plate?
No plate gets all the switching done at the sliders (one slider is a 3 way). With a plate, a push/pull or another slider and some screw hole repositioning will be needed.

I was expecting to be strongly on the side of "more plates" but actually, that guitar has enough plates with the two.

Re: To plate or not to plate?
If I had to decide aesthetics vs functionality I would have tried to compromise things out even if that would have lead to complicate things out with the re- arrangement of the necessary components for the sake of keeping the chrome plate in place but, in this case, I've got to admit that I prefer the solution without it.
So it's two birds with one stone getting functionality and a looks in one shot.
On a side note, and it's just my personal taste, I would have opt-out the mini humbucker ring too and directly mounted it on the pickguard so that the entire layout would be less crowdy. Not big deal though, the guitar appears great nonetheless

Re: To plate or not to plate?
Thanks. Yeah, I had considered a pickguard mount Firebird too. I was leaning toward the ring in case I decided to go for a P90 sized pickup swap later since I tend to mess around with things, but I guess that most of the other pickups I would consider are available in a mini-humbucker form factor, and the guard could always be re-routed if i were set on it.Amon 7.L wrote: On a side note, and it's just my personal taste, I would have opt-out the mini humbucker ring too and directly mounted it on the pickguard so that the entire layout would be less crowdy. I've been leaning toward no plate as well. There's something about the aesthetic balance diagonally across the body that works. If I go with the three way switch, the Jazzmasters would use the Jag series/parallel mod using both switches up or down, and the 3 way would take that output and bypass, add, or isolate the Firebird. The rhythm circuit gets the bird.

No plate. It looks fine, and gets the job done.
It's a good looking guitar. Absolutely no reason to sacrifice functionality for aesthetics.

I voted no plate but maybe put white switches in it.

I also voted no plate, and agree with the white switches, but only or the guard mounted switches. It'd look cool to have the upper plate with black switches, i.e. contrast.rank wrote:I voted no plate but maybe put white switches in it.

Excellent, and thanks to all for the aesthetic tinkering. I knew there was a reason I was holding on to a pair of AV65 pickup covers too....that subtle coloring...the tasteful thickness.

I like the sliders with no plate. It just cleans it up some. Either way, it's beautiful though.
