I want an Electric 12 String...here are a few ideas! help!

Post by BlixaFan » Thu Oct 05, 2017 4:55 pm

hey everyone,

so I'm currently gassing for a 12 string electric. the problem is that I'm a lefty, so things are a little more difficult to do

here are 3 options that i've been thinking about:

1. build a Fender Electric XII from scratch. I don't know where i could get someone to make me a lefty Electric XII body (paging Paul  ), and i think that getting the right parts, the bridge and all that would be extremely tough. Neck would be a Musikraft, because they actually make a "hockey stick" headstock, which is one of the things i like the most about the XII. I'd like blocks and binding but it gets pretty expensive so we'll see...

This would certainly be the most expensive option, but probably the one i'd like to do the most.

(oh yeah, color would probably be LPB :-* )

2. build a 12 string telecaster: (buy a loaded body, which is much easier to find left handed), get a 12 string tele bridge, and then get a Musikraft neck. done and done. color would probably be something boring as I mostly only like all the 60s fender colors on offsets.... unless i did something like shell pink :w00t:

3. get a Musikraft 12 string neck, get a 12 string strat bridge, throw it one of my strats that I don't play much (in fact, it's the first electric I ever owned). this would definitely be the cheapest option (though the neck still wouldn't be cheap), and one i'm considering so that I can scratch my 12 string itch for not a huge pile of money.

and now tell me that I'm crazy for even considering building a XII from scratch (or tell me where to source parts :D )

what would you guys do?

I'd love to help you with the body and the pickguard if Paul's got too much on, I do have a XII model I've been waiting to try out :)

tell me more! :w00t: :w00t:
my biggest concern is finding the hardware, particularly the bridge, as i don't think anyone makes an aftermarket Electric XII bridge. but a body and pickguard would be a great start!

I'll try and dig up some renders I did of the XII with a Schaller bridge, only I put a little chrome shroud around it so it keeps the lines of the original... That seemed like a good solution.

I'm not sure there's a retailer in Canada, but there's a brand called Revelation that builds Jazzmaster-ish 12-strings for lefties at a very reasonable price. I've got a right-handed one and am very happy with it.

have warmoth or MK make you a LH jazz master body with no routing.
$175 at Warmoth.
Then a MK neck. $195.
here's mine:

I'm a lefty, too, and I see a homemade 12 in my future as well. You need to troll ebay and Reverb for those key parts (neck and bridge), and base the approach about what you can find.

Does Ric offer a lefty 12 string bridge, or is it symmetrical and flippable?

Although the most expensive option, I think that it will keep on nagging you for eternity of you don't go for your desired blue Electric XII. You can go for an alternative, but that might be throwing money away, as it is not an XII...

In Flemish we have a saying: "goedkoop is duurkoop", which basically means "going for the cheap route will in the end cost you more than going for the more expensive route in the first place".

XII hardware is hard to find, but can be found. Apart from the hardware: "it's just a Fender-oid instrument", it's not that hard to assemble.

i like that saying! I'm a firm believer of it as well.

for the hardware, i think we've got a pretty solid workaround for the bridge, and tuners are a piece of cake haha.

You may also take a look on those...
https://www.revelationguitars.co.uk/guitar/rjt-6012/

Offset Body. Multiple color options - and from what I've heard and read they should be at least on the same level as a
Squier VM. And they come quite cheap!
I'm thinking about getting one of those 12 strings myself (right-hand-version/rosewood/vintage white) but I'm not really sure about these Strat-style tremolos they have (otherwise I'd also pick up the Thinline they have - just to compare it to my Thinline Jag.

One solution we discussed involved making a chrome bridge surround to fit around the Gotoh 12-string bridge

Something like this:
