Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
Thanks everybody, I'm super excited that it's turning out so well.
I got the new switch today and re-wired it. I did have to swap the hot and ground of the neck pair. I guess I'm not that knowledgeable about humbuckers. I will update the wiring diagram on the other page in case anybody ever decides to do something like this themselves. All positions are working as intended and I can't wait to hear what it'll sound like.

That's amazing work, man.ThePearDream wrote: ↑Wed Sep 19, 2018 3:45 pmI'll probably never learn to expect it. At least I've learned to start doing wiring ahead of time. Having these things happen during assembly is just the worst.
Still needs level sanding & buffing & the finish on the sides/back, but I couldn't help sharing this sneak peak.

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
Okay. I did some assembly this morning. I still need to do lots of little tasks - glue the nut, add the strap buttons, general setup stuff. But, it passed the first test and didn't immediately fall apart under string tension. I took some quick outdoor shots on my dirty patio table.
Here's a shot with a classic Talman and a Jazzmaster to show size differences. As a reminder, this body is scaled up around 9.5% and is actually 1-1/2" wider than the classic Talman.
Final assembled weight is 6 lb. 14 oz. I did weigh the body by itself and it was about 3 lbs. with the finish on. There is a lot of hardware and 4 pickups adding to the weight though. In any event, I'm happy that it is under 7 lbs. The body is 1-13/16" thick, just a hair over normal. Also, when I decided to redo the control plate, I decided to get it laser cut from acrylic as well - just to be sure that I liked the layout before starting the metal work again. So the control plate is a thin sheet of two tone (brushed silver on black) acrylic. I'm sure it won't last a super long time, but I felt like it made sense to try it out. I didn't do a bit of shielding, but since every switch position is humbucking, there isn't any hum. Lastly, I had set myself a $300 budget (not including parts I already had). I ended up going over by about $2.50. Oh well, I still made a highly custom guitar for the cost of a Squier, and gained some new skills along the way.
Unplugged it is very loud and resonant, as expected. I plugged it in for a few minutes, and while I still need to adjust pickup heights, all positions sounded great.
Better pics and sound clips to come soon.

Boy, that's the perfect intermediary size. Looks great. Your patio table never had it better.

I love the finish
The scaled up size looks great too, makes the trem really work well on the body, im a big fan of this.

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
I took this in to my work yesterday so I could get some decent photos (and to let people lavish praise one me).
I should have let the finish cure longer before assembly. The finish isn't as smooth as shiny as it was initially, and it got pretty dull where my arm sits on the top. I promise to get some sound clips posted soon.
The body is really comfortable and everything sits in the right spot for me. Tone-wise, it is super bright, even in series selections. I used 1 meg pots, because that is what was originally used on the Telecaster Deluxe, but may change these out for 500K. With so much brightness, the bass cut switch isn't very useful. I may also play with lowering the treble side magnets more. But overall it does sound really good, all of the switch positions have a distinct and usable sound. In particular, the series and parallel selections for the two outer coils are cool in that they allow going from crunch to clean really quickly, while keeping the same tone, sort of like turning on an overdrive pedal. The chambered body is really loud and resonant unplugged and is really good at creating controlled feedback.
I'm liking this design so much, I'm considering doing a second one with a non-hollow black limba body, black pickguard, and proper WRHBs.
Like this, but with real WRHBs:

Re: ThePearDream's Talman Projects
Alright, I made some quick recordings.
https://soundcloud.com/doug-cannafax/se ... ckup-demos
I'm still figuring out recording. I plugged into some pedals, then into my interface and didn't do any amp modeling on the computer.
Each track goes Neck coils in series>Outer coils in parallel>Outer coils in series>Inner coils in parallel>Bridge coils in series
Info about times, positions, and effects are in the track information.
