Yesterday I glued up the two layers of plywood for the core of the body. I used screws in the waste area to do most of the work, with a few clamps for good measure.

Image

Today I cut out the outline on the band saw and hogged out the cavities on the drill press, then sanded close to the lines on the ROSS

Image

I will test out routing the plywood on the interior cavities before I try it on the outside.

This is some good quality plywood. I ran across very few voids. As I mentioned earlier, the plywood "end grain" will be left exposed with a clear finish. I've always enjoyed the look of exposed plywood layers when done well, like in this Eames table:

As a professional designer, things like honesty in materials, is something I spend time thinking about and that I place a lot of value in. I think this is going to look great with a sparkly fuchsia top on it.

Top and back will be thinner sheets of maple veneer plywood. The top will be bound and have a fuschia sparkle paint job.

I've got the pickups all set up and ready to go. I got a second middle pickup for $20. Then bought a whopping six different types of magnets: short and long sizes of A2, A3, and A5.

Image

The coils will be arranged (from bridge to neck): bridge, middle (rwrp), neck, middle (rwrp). This will allow every pickup combination to be hum cancelling. I decided to use A5 for the wound strings and A3 on the plain strings for the neck pair, then A3 for the wound and A2 for the plain on the bridge pair. I bought the long slugs in the longest size available for all three magnet types, so I can set the body of the pickups lower. Also, i chose to get un-beveled magnets, so I wouldn't have to make my order even more complicated by worrying about polarity.

To switch out the slugs, I set the new slug on the existing, letting the magnets tell me when they were positioned with the correct polarity for that coil. Then I gently pressed the new slug in place, pushing out the old one
Image

Each coil gets three short and three long slugs.

And here we go, ready to install... after I do a crap ton of other stuff.

That's just awesome. You HAVE to post some audio clips when you're done with this one. I'm really curious how the different magnets will sound together.

Looking real good indeed!
My two cents again - I would push the protruding pole pieces a bit further down, as having them sticking out so high above the bobbin can be 'detrimental to the sound', which is of course a purely subjective matter, but I find that having the bobbin closer to the strings keeps the sound more focused...

Just a friendly PSA for the folks following along, swapping poles like this should only be done on plastic bobbin pickups, never on pickups which wind the coil on the magnets like Fender does, it will destroy the pickup.

Been enjoying following this thread, good work.

Can't help myself, got to be pedantic, a slug is the the steel pole in in a humbucker or p-90 that uses bar magnets underneath, it is not magnetic, these would just be magnets, they are both poles but only one is magnetic.

I did try, sometimes I hope to get proven wrong when I feed such compulsions.

Keep it up!
Logic gates based on billiard-ball computer designs have also been made to operate using live soldier crabs of the species Mictyris guinotae in place of the billiard balls.

You may be right. I will leave them high initially though. It will be easy to lower them if needed.

Yes, definitely don't do this with non plastic bobbin pickups. No worries about the pedantry, I did use the wrong term.

I got some routing done this afternoon. The plywood routed nicely for the most part, a few voids were exposed though. I plan to fill any of those nooks and crannies with epoxy later. I also broke out my Shinto rasp to do a slight belly contour. Then I roughly cut out the back and glued that up.

This morning I got the back routed out to the outline, gave it a 1/4" round-over and finished the rough shaping of the tummy cut. The top is gluing up now. Next will be routing the outline on the top, routing the pickup and control areas, drilling the bridge holes, opening up the trem cavity in the top, sanding, epoxy filling, sanding again, the whole binding process, and routing the neck pocket. Then it should be ready to finish.

I also beveled the pickguard. When I got the body templates laser cut from mdf, I got the pickguard done in mdf as well - to use as a template for the beveleling.
The acrylic routed beautifully. Then I counter sunk the screw holes.

Nice. What does it weigh with no finish?
