JB Hutto Style build
Hi all,
I just impulse bought an "AR" style body from Rosser Guitars on ebay. It is based off of the now famous JB Hutto guitar made by Airline way back in the day. The body is a piece of knotty pine and I was hoping to get some finishing ideas from you guys. I'm trying to decide between three options: either going with:
1. the "barncaster" look of a pine tele (which i'm partial to at the moment and I think it would be a shame to cover up those knots, but I'm not sure if it would look good on this body style)
2. painting it a solid, fender custom color...but not red just because I don't want to build a jack white clone
3. reranch's desert sand '59.
I've never worked with pine, either, so any and all tips are appreciated. I know it can be a little difficult.
I'm thinking of putting in a wide range humbucker in the neck and either another in the bridge or some sort of cool single coil, humbucker case-housed pup. Also most definitely going to put a bigsby on the guitar. Pics below- let me know what you think. All ideas/tips are welcomed

Nice buy. Is the body light weight?
I have been watching his auctions for a while now. He uses to offer custom bodies made to order. Every time I tried to order he discontinued the option I wanted!
Now I'm waiting for the double cut danelectro or jaguar shapes with the German carve to show up with filtertron routes.

Yes, very light! 4 lbs 3.3 oz, which will be nice to have in the arsenal since most of my other guitars are cement blockssecondhand wrote:Nice buy. Is the body light weight?
Oh yeah that's a bummer. I've watched his stuff for a bit too. I got it for $56 bucks so too good of a deal to pass up. Plus, I've only ever heard great things about his products. High quality and a pleasure to work with.secondhand wrote:I have been watching his auctions for a while now. He uses to offer custom bodies made to order. ah yes I was thinking about these. I don't know if I'm the biggest fan of their sound, though. I think I may go with a gold foil in a humbucker case but nothing is set in stone. First need to figure out the finishsecondhand wrote:Here is a link to a single coil in a humbucker case:

love that pickgaurd! Black and white looks great.
I've bought a few goofy Japanese vintage guitars with the intention of parting them out to make some new and improved oddballs but in the end didn't have it in me to take them apart.
I'd love to pick up some of the resoglass bodies but it seems they are not in production at this time.

check out guitar kits USA- they make res o glas kits. I bought from them a long time ago, but I think they are still producing productssecondhand wrote:love that pickgaurd! Black and white looks great.

Love what you did! I actually read through your whole thread after I got this body to figure out what I should do with it and am really impressed!HNB wrote:NICE! I did one with a body and neck Cooterfinger did. I love it.

I love the idea of keeping it natural and doing a rustic "barncaster" thing that you see a lot of pine tele builds do, but I just can't figure out mentally if this would look weird with this body shape or not. It is certainly "futuristic" so part of me feels like it has to have a solid color, especially something funky, but I also love the old, worn pine look with all of the knots exposed etc. Really having a hard time trying to figure this out. Since you made one, what do you think?

Re: JB Hutto Style build
I have done it both ways and both are pretty cool. Rustic natural would be easier than a solid finish with those knots. Also seems to be off point to have a knotty pine body and hide the knots.

I'm thinking a really dark stain. Maybe sand back a little to show off the carve.

Didn't know Rosser was doing this body style! That is exciting. Have fun with that.

Re: JB Hutto Style build
just to add to the pile of ideas:
desert sand top, and natural finished back,
maybe a gold guard?
