Success! Epoxy Tort

Post by Deed_Poll » Fri Sep 08, 2017 7:31 am

Hey guys,

So some of you may know that I have been having a dreadful time finding any half decent red tortoiseshell.

I discovered there are a number of artists (painty artists, not music-y artists) using epoxy and different techniques to make abstract wall art.

I found one such artist locally to me (Rebecca Kent) who was up for the challenge of making some tort-like epoxy material.

I brought her my '66 Jazz Bass which has some lovely faded red tort, and she took some pictures for inspiration. I also provided a scrap piece of white 1-ply vinyl pickguard material to check the adhesion, etc.

Here are the results! I'm actually really happy with this.

I will instruct her to do the "final piece" (2ft x 3ft) with a little more of the dark brown, and perhaps substituting a light translucent yellow for the opaque white.

I'm very excited about this!

That's gorgeous! Is she the same one who made that kinda orange-ish sheet a few months back? You've got some seriously talented friends Dan 8)

Cheers guys!

J, no this is a different one. The one in Scotland used more heat gun techniques that were deforming the plastic and decided she couldn't do it. Rebecca uses more swirly techniques I think, I'll need to see if it cuts cleanly on the machine and if I'll need to thickness it down and sand / polish the surface (there is a chance of air bubbles).

Looks good though, eh!

Great! Now I want pizza for dinner! ::) ;)

EDIT - Just for the record, this looks really cool & it's great to see you're exploring the more experimental side of your craft. From what I've seen, there's very little of this kind of stuff around.

I would be quite happy, getting a guard that looks like that!

Beautiful . . . . I would REALLY like some . . . .

How hard is the epoxy? I know it can be hard an brittle instead of the soft and (more) pliable that's usual for pick guard material . . . be especially careful in drilling holes close to the edge if that's the case.

:w00t: That is awesome! I've been wondering if this would be viable- any further info (on materials used, or who would make some up) would be great.

Cheers everyone, yeah I'm going to have to test cut some on the machine before I commission the larger piece and I guess we'll see how it looks!

Good opportunity to test my 120° v bit as well!

Initially it might be easier to do it on standard thickness W/B/W material, maybe thicknessed a little from the back, or maybe if I can find some cheap pearloid or similar (with a thin WBW layer behind) I can machine that down to thickness.

If anyone knows where I can get WBW material in large sizes in 1/16" (1.5mm) or thereabouts I would very much appreciate the link up.

I'll keep y'all posted on this.

Not 1.5 mm, but 2.3mm here:

I bet you some of these Chinese eBay sellers would be willing to make you a few sheets of thiner w/b/w blanks.
