New sheet from Rebecca!
I really think we're getting somewhere on the vintage red front, next piece I told Rebecca to do the exact same thing but to knock the edge off the darkest patches and replace with some very slightly darkened red. Then we're going to start going to town with different swirl effects

Looks super!
So how will this work in the future?
Will you sell sheets, or can I send you a dwg of
my pickguard and you"ll route it? Or is this exklusive to your own builds?

Amazing! I wonder what it would look like over a clear base with a metal shield behind it. PM'd to claim MIM Jazz Bass guinnea pig status.

Re: Success! Epoxy Tort
I'm looking at this tort and I just see a rickenjagger in white with one of these guards, but in black and white and shades of grey. That would be neat looking.
This is an excellent rectangle

Re: Success! Epoxy Tort
First Jaguar guards made from Rebecca's epoxy tort are off the machine!
They're still satin after the thicknessing operation I did on them, and all the photos I took washed out all the deep red colour, so I had to add a filter! So the colours are not representative.
I've got an epoxy polishing kit on the way with compound and some very high grit sanding pads. There's always a bit of orange peel in the sheets when I get them from Rebecca (the local artist who works with epoxy) and that's just a natural part of the drying process, hence the need to bring it down to level and sand back up to polish.
We're working on a clamping system so that she can make the sheets face down in glass, hopefully that will result in a brilliant finish from the off.
I'll take some proper pictures in sunlight tomorrow.
They're reassuringly heavy, and a little thicker than normal material, pretty much 1/8" thick, but the tort is a good amount of that (I managed to find some thinner backing material).
This piece was thicker at the edges and thinner in the middle, so after thicknessing it all evenly, one side of each guard has ended up lighter than the other where it has removed more material! I guess the way Rebecca works is to start with lighter colours and add the darker ones on top. It's something we can work on I'm sure, but I think these two look pretty cool as they are!
Cheers folks,
Dan

Re: Success! Epoxy Tort
I actually don't see the variation in tone from light to dark as a 'problem'. This is supposed to mimic a biological product and I've never come across one that's 'even' in any measurable quantity across a significant 'distance' . . . as such the variation from left to right actually adds to the effect . . . man/machine made materials are - biologically speaking - remarkable 'even'. In fact, the more things match up in biological samples the more suspicious one should be about the data.
When thinking about any advice given always ask yourself "why would (s)he know more than I do".
