I would love to be your guinea pig! What do I need to do?Deed_Poll wrote:If anyone wants to be a guinea pig, let me know! I will need reference guards to make absolutely sure my toolpaths are correct for different mounting hole patterns. Particularly if you have an AVRI or MIJ Jaguar / Jazzmaster, or an AVRI / MIM P-Bass / J-Bass guard you can send my way we can help each other out!

Haha! Or creme caramel!
So if anybody wants to help, send me a PM. I need to collect your standard hole pickguards so I can be sure they will fit what they're supposed to! I have received PMs from two of you lovely people already offering me an AVRI JM guard and an AVRI Jag guard, and possibly a Tele guard. So I think those are sorted. I think I have a Strat pickguard also lying around already.
My highest priorities then are probably MIJ JM and Jag guards, Mustang guards, and perhaps some popular but different MIM versions like HH Jags (Classic Player?) and Jazz Bass / Bass VI / Precision Bass.
I would also really appreciate your expertise on what fits what... Am I right in thinking the Squier VM JMs and Jags will fit AVRI pickguards? Also the MIM Roadworn / Lacquer Jazzmasters?
One of those new Fender American Professional JM guards would be nice as well...
If you can think of anything else that's fairly common that I've missed, please pitch in. Cyclone? Duo-sonic? I'm not hugely familiar with these.
Now for the "guinea pig" bit...
Basically I'm waiting on some backing material which should be a bit thinner (2.2mm instead of 2.8mm), that should arrive in 2 to 4 weeks. This still won't be perfect - it will be slightly too thick, but I can machine a bit off the back.
For now, I have a few options, none of which are all that close to vintage correct...
First option is some sign engraving plastic I bought. That's the right thickness, but the black layer is stupidly wide. Like there's probably maximum 0.3mm of white either side. Which figures, because the point of it is to laser or mill off the top layer to engrave writing etc.
Second option is some standard 2.8mm 3-ply material. I could probably flatten it down some on the machine to get it nearer vintage thickness, but the black layer will still be a tiny bit too wide. The advantage of this though is that I have some parchment / ivory (yellow / creamy? what I use for mint green) so we can play with the backing colours.
I'm considering getting some really cheap pearloid and machining the pearloid layer off, if I can do that without producing too much heat and warping the material. Then I can flip it over so that any machining marks are on the underside, and Rebecca can do her magic on the original underside of the material, and any scratches will be hidden under the guard / shielding or whatever you decide to use.
If you have a guard you're happy to lend me, I don't have to make your pickguard for that guitar! And I don't have to make it right away out of the backing plastics I have lying around. For instance, if you have an AVRI Jazzmaster that you want a pickguard for, but you're happy to send me an AVRI Jazz Bass pickguard (for instance) you can send me that guard to help me out and then redeem your discounted JM guard later on, when I have the plastics you want.
I will still have to charge you for the guards, but will be offering a decent discount. I don't want to be spamming / shilling on this board (mods, please let me know if this is too far and I will happily remove this) and the product should come out a good deal cheaper than a Spitfire guard, though obviously Mark's got the authenticity and reputation on his side (and rightly so).
Hope this is useful!

If you can send me the original, I'll happily copy it for you! And it would be another shape on fileDrewbertca wrote:need this for my mangled PSVI guard.....
Quick update - my shipment of backing material came from China today! It's an ivory / parchment colour, and is about 0.5mm thinner than normal W/B/W. So it will be a good starting point until I get my own backing laminated thinner (1/16").
Cheers!

Re: Success! Epoxy Tort
There is indeed some extra news to share...
Got the first piece back from Rebecca, yet to cut a guard yet but it's looking good!
It's really difficult to photograph, my phone camera wasn't bringing out the red at all and to get the hue right I had to push the saturation too high, meaning they really don't show the true depth and detail. But here goes...
We've learned a lot from this piece and we're definitely moving forward towards a more swirly, vintage accurate style. But I'm really excited to see how this piece comes out after machining. Fingers crossed!

I wouldn't use it if I were you as it could very likely melt your guitar. I would also be happy to dispose of it for you.
