If You Could Have Only One...

Post by Shadoweclipse13 » Thu Aug 17, 2017 1:00 am

...guitar, to be your perfect guitar, what would it be? Price would be no issue, just what is it?

My two favorite guitar tones are a JM and a Tele. I'd do one of Dan/Deed_Poll's Offset Telecasters with a single coil Tele bridge and pickup, and JM neck pickup, with a B+B maple/rosewood neck :? 8)

What have you been dreaming of?

I love pretty much everything a Telecaster has to offer but I've fallen in love with short scale necks lately.
A short scale tele with a high output single in the bridge and something quirky in the neck (old goldfoil, toaster, dearmond or whatever) would be right up my alley. Paint it metallic / sparkle black, give it B&D and I'd probably never get rid of it!

I'm currently building a short scale thinline Telecaster deluxe which'll probably have Jazzmaster pickups in it.

If I could only have one guitar it'd be this one. Which is lucky because it's mine.

My buddy found one of these after some serious hunting but loves it. Its a Shortscale Tele with a Guild Humbucker in the neck from a few years back. Not sure but don't think they were around for very long but he found one in a tiny little music store in Wales and says its rad.

I remember when those were released! They look like a fun guitar but they're really rare.
Also. I'm a big guy (195cm or 6 foot 4) and those SS Tele's have a smaller body so I'm afraid it'd feel like a toy on me.
Thanks for the tip tho'! 8)

Take my '07 SG Standard, put an offset trem / bridge combo on it, Rickenbacker hi-gain in the bridge, a strong-ish single coil in the neck.

The only downside is that SGs with an offset trem are :-X :k

This is kinda :k

But this with an offset trem? :w00t: To me, I think it's the knob/control style and that big pickguard. I've never been a fan of either personally, and prefer the 60's SG or Melody Maker styles better.

Awesome guitars guys!! Really interesting to see everyone's choices 8)

Depends what I have to do with it.
If all I ever did was goof around at home, a Gretsch 5420 covers it. The pickups sound half way between single coil and PAF, so add an EQ pedal and you can coax it into either territory, PLUS, you have an acoustic guitar when you pull the cable out. I'm not one for spending more than I need to.

If I'm gigging... I've been gigging my perfect guitars for the last 20 years - a pair of custom made ESP HSS Strat-a-likes.

To be honest, as long as it doesn't have a super skinny neck, the frets are in the right place and it's setup properly, I can live with anything. I'm more picky about my amp.

Well...

I don't think this answer is going to get any cool smileys or hearts...

but since you asked... The perfect guitar to me, would be a black 335 with all the good bits from my JM (trem, staytrem, pickups with JM spacing, neck profile, etc) replacing the stock parts on a 335.
Unfortunately, I hate how much I love the way my JM plays/sounds, or I'd ditch it. And that's not me pulling a cool-guy or pining for the good 'ol days... I've just grown sick from seeing offsets EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME.
Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity.

Yeah Shadow, totally agree. I think the new style trem shape like the Mastery MV on the SG might work better too, but it's just a small guitar and feels cramped in that picture you posted. Somehow the larger Lyre vibratos can look good on them though.

Realistically, my Jag-Stang with EMG pickups. That's the guitar I find myself always going back to when I need to reduce how many guitars I"m using for a gig or project. It's also been rock solid reliable.

But since this is the Mods & Projects thread, if I could only have one and it had to be something I don't already have it'd probably be a Jaguar with a Mustang Vibrato on it and a additional middle pickup and a FreeWay Selector switch to switch between pickups.

My "one only" would have to be built around this design:

Perhaps 3-5% larger body, traditional JM/Jag trem, Gibson scale, but the same pickup wiring. I have become a huge fan of this pickup configuration, amazing number of combinations and most of them very useful and cool sounding.
