What Flat-Wounds Do You Use?

Post by Natar » Mon Jul 17, 2017 7:26 am

Hey everyone,

What flat-wounds do you use on your Jazzmaster? I've only ever played regular 10s on my partscaster. I have a Mastery bridge, so I haven't experienced any issues, but I want to give flat-wounds a shot.

I've used Pyramids and Chromes. Both were nice, but I've gone back to roundwounds. I've still got flat Chromes on my Hofner bass, Martin acoustic, and ES-125 -- I love them.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

D'adarrio chrome 11's. I've been wanting to try those pyramids and thomastiks too, but the chromes are half the price and I love em.

Pyramid Golds are amazing strings. Ridiculously good quality & very long lasting.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Pyramids and T-I's (both nickel wound). They are more expensive than stainless flatwounds such as Chromes, but stainless wound strings eat up your frets way faster than nickel wounds, so I factor the cost of fretwork into the equation. Also, I get way longer life out of them.

Um. Yeah. I'm just doing that. It's been long enough! :D
I have a Yamaha that is just too bright... I also have a feeling it'll be perfect with flats! Thanks for the inspiration, T.

But I'd still like to hear your thoughts on the differences it made with your Martin, pretty please and thanks :)

Flatwounds work really great on acoustics.

I want to try acoustic half-rounds, but I can't find them at any shops. Supposedly they're the bees knees.

Tomastik 13's (best)

D'Addarrio chrome 10 and 11s (tie with Fender)
Fender 11's

Guitar Fetish 10/11/12's (worst)

Comparing the Guitar Fetish to the others really shows where the extra money is going to...quality.

Tomastiks are super nice. Head and shoulders above even the D'Addario. I got two packs out of a Guitar Center clearance bin for 2 bucks. I didn't even realize they were normally 30!
Good as the best. Bad as the worst!

Oh yeah, it changed my life. It gives it a 'deader', more vintage-y sound, if that makes any sense, and no string scrape!! I HIGHLY recommend trying it out. I made the change maybe four or five years ago and I'll never go back.

I thoroughly dislike Chromes, so I went for LaBella 20PL. Stocked on them when they were cheap (11€/set, now they are 26). It's like having strings made of glass: that's how polished they are. Quite stiff, but having an enourmous sound.

EDIT: as for taming the shrillness of an acoustic: try Martin Retro strings (Monel), they are great for that purpose, and they last VERY long, with no running-in time.

I was using Chromes 10s for years on my jag hh. But they've more than doubled in price since then. I bought a set of T-Is 10s last restring because they were only a little more than the chromes, and they still sound great and it's been 4 or 5 months.

I did try black nylon wrapped Labellas once, they felt nice but I found they started sounding dull after only a few weeks.

my absolute favourites are DR legends (11's on med and long scale, 12's on short scale) but are too expensive for normal everyday strings.
i used to thoroughly hate daddario chromes but have actually really been liking them lately. the wound g tends to feel more like its rolling accross the frets than bending when you do bends, so ive been using chromes 11-50 with a plain 20g G string (have to buy a loose 20g string and put it together myself but a small price to pay for a really good setup). loving it!
