Should I spray my VM Mustang pickguard?

Post by RyanB95 » Mon Jun 26, 2017 11:01 am

Long story short, had my Squire VM Mustang in vintage white for a few years now, still love the thing but obviously Ive grown a little used to its appearance. I always like the blonde-tort look but I'm toying with the idea of having a white guard instead.
They are difficult to find and other model pickguards dont fit, so I've got dome Plastikote white spray and some wire wool to do the job myself.
Im now getting cold feet, thinking it wont look as impressive and i will ruin my only pickguard, has anyone else done this mod?
Need advice!

Eh, do it. If it turns out crappy, get a new guard from sneaky T here on the board.

Or just have him make you a white one.
This is an excellent rectangle

Yeah, do it. Pickguard is the best part to play with. As mackerelmint said, you can always get a new guard, worse come worst.

You can get pickguards very cheap on eBay, and they actually fit. Spraypaint looks horrible.

EDIT: A US spec pickguard doesn't fit? I thought the VMs would interchange, maybe that's a mistake though.

I've spray painted a pickguard before. It looked okay. I eventually sanded the paint off so it it can be a reversible mod but getting the plastic shiny again is a PITA and its easier to just replace it, which I eventually did. Not familiar with the specific paint you are using, so ymmv.

It always looks shit, IMO. They are cheap enough to replace with whatever colour you want.

Havent done it yet, people saying it will look poor putting me off and rightly so i dont want to spoil my guitar.
However, people who are saying that they are cheap and easy to find, where?
To my knowledge the squier vintage mustang pickguards are not readily available and do not fit with any other mustang model.

Ebay has some for $7-$15 after a quick check.

Sounds like filing may be needed but google seems to tell me its possible with some work. I have no clue how well a US or Japanese pickguard will fit on a Squier so caveat emptor.

I doubt these will fit Squier, i believe the pickguard will not line up unfortunatly.

I have fitted eyguitars Jazzmaster and Jaguar pickguards to my Squier JM's and Jags so I think it's a safe bet that US shaped Mustang pickguards will fit yours.

Will try and find some more information about them then cheers! Probably going to swap to a white guard (whether it be a new guard or spray) and I have bought some black pick up covers hopefully it will look quite nice
