Hey Shadow, I've got a conundrum. You seem to be pretty good with mustang switches (I'm not).

Here's the idea:

What do you mean by "switch"? Theres a 3rd one in the schematics? Because I tried the first option (N series + B off), and it's a dead setting.

Also, B+N is is actually B+N in series. Haven't tried the other ones...

Mustang/DP3T switches are tricky. I've attempted making a few schematics with them using those jumpers you have on terminals 3-5 and 4-6 on both, and what I always end up finding is that, they mess you up. Those jumpers might help for one or two positions, but for a third they just make some other connection that you don't want to make, likely a dead-spot (as Gordon has already mentioned ;D). I think you're on the right track with having an off position for the switch, as that makes things a little easier I think.

Unless Gordon beats me to it, I'll take a look at seeing what I can come up with this weekend for you 8)

Well, there has to be a dead spot (pickups in series when one is off). I'll see what I can do, but I don't like slide switches... :D

Quick try, waiting for confirmation... Dead spot is inevitable, but I think the rest works. I moved the positions of the switches as well, I don't think the off position on the middle is doable.

If the guard isn't routed yet, I'd suggest you do so with 2-pos slide switches instead, and use a push-pull for the phase reversal. The only way to get all options without a dead spot. And it's also easier to read when you play (switch-heads like me think of the different options, but too often forget about the playability :ph34r: )...

Thankfully nothing is routed or set in stone yet, just ideas. My plan is to have an on/off switch for each pickup then send them to a 3 way switch wired like an Esquire (thats what the "SWITCH" was in my diagram). But like you said, my mind started going crazy with options and combinations.

The issue with having the pickups in series is than none of them can be off, since it cuts the signal completely. A 2-position switch (toggle or slide, but DPDT) allows a clever trick: they work as individual on/off switches, but when both are on their off position, pickups are actually wired in series. I think the out-of-phase option is rarely useful, so having it on a push-pull is fine in my book.

Yeah, I know you need both pickups on to get series, just like you would to get your pickups out of phase.

Really? I prefer OoP to Series... was hoping to be able to get OoP In Series!

You could do out-of-phase and series together, but it would definitely be tricky with 3-way sliders. It would be easier to have a 4-way Tele/Marr-Guar blade switch, and then a separate slider/switch for the out-of-phase.

That's the way I'd do it: with only 2 pickups, have a 4-way switch with B/B+N (parallel)/N/B+N (series), and then a separate switch for the phase option. OR you could do a rotary that could have all of those options on a single switch, and in a way that wouldn't allow for any dead spots.

You sure can; but because of the way poles connects, you're left with only two options:

- you get a dead spot; that is, of course, a bit of a bummer
- you wire it like a 2-pos, and connect the extra poles to the middle position; which gives you twice the same setting on one switch, it's silly

It's a problem for the parallel/series option, the out-of-phase is easy on the 3-pos (to avoid a push-pull), so you can always have two different switches. So, with what you want to have, there are four choices:

- one dead setting
- one superfluous setting
- no dead spot, but an extra push-pull
- no dead spot, but two different slide switches

OK, I'll add to the confusion such as it is . . . . .

The most elegant solution I've found here is 2 2P2T sliders and a push/pull

Why?

The sliders can give you neck, series, parralel, bridge with the push/pull providing the phase switch ... all options are available and instantly recognizable from the switches.
