Fender AV65 Refinish Project
Unfortunately while trying to quickly fix a strap button on my Olympic White AV65 Jazzmaster I got super glue all over it... I popped open the seal to the bottle near the strap button and without applying any pressure the glue went everywhere... So, I tried immediately wiping off which just made it worse, and then tried using some carefully applied acetone which - yep you guessed it - just took off some of the nitro around the glue. No way to save it, so I thought I'd make it a beater and play it as is. But, after receiving my '59/'67 back from a fresh refinish from MJT (and impressed with their work and how closely they listened to my direction), I decided to just go for a full refinish of the body and headstock. After much deliberation, I decided on a closet clean Daphne Blue finish - no checking (I live in Chicago anyway, and if it comes before May I'm sure it'll start checking in no time). I'd like to go gold hardware, so I might try and source as much as I can, but without a real vibrato I'm not sure if I'd like to do it. But, I will be getting a new spitfire guard, putting on normal JM pickup covers, and I might try and go for the shinier trem (if someone wants to trade, I'm down!)
Here's my inspiration shot:
You can see the damage here :
One thing to note when I took it apart is how faded and checked the original finish was (and how much paint my mastery trem ripped off....):
I'll be updating as I get photos from MJT. It went out yesterday and will arrive this week, so hopefully it'll be stripped asap!

Wow, that faded olympic white looks great. Bummer you're getting it refinished, but that daphne blue will look great! Excited to see it. Just got my second project back from MJT, turned out great. Unfortunately, I was playing around with the mock up and holding it up like I was playing it - my trem fell out of the cavity and left a scratch in the brand new finish, right behind the route for the trem

Sorry to hear about your misfortune . . . Yeah, superglue and acetone . . . insidious stuff, sometime you NEED them but otherwise I try to stay as far away from them as possible. The ONLY thing I really like them for is gluing sandpaper to levels (between 2 layers of masking tape) and I keep that well away from my projects when I'm doing it . . . .
When thinking about any advice given always ask yourself "why would (s)he know more than I do".

That's some nice-looking wood you got under that finish!
MJT does good work. Can't wait to see the end result.

Was about to tell you not to touch the original olympic white finish...., that yellowed top coat looked amazing!!!..., but I'm totally into blue JMs. Looking forward to this.
Did you strip the paint yourself or did MJT?

Damn I think just about everyone on this forum drools over that guitar... I'd love to see updates on this as I might get my Olympic white AV65 refinned before it starts yellowing (by then I wouldn't want to touch it because damn yellowed OW looks awesome).kracdown wrote: Here's my inspiration shot:
Just please for the love of god put a mint guard on it when you're done! IMO tort never looks good on daphne or sonic blues.

MJT did the strip. I don't have the time plus its only about $100 extra which at the end of the day is not a huge deal. I loved the white, but the super glue all over it bothered me way too much. I've always wanted a light blue guitar anyway.TruckstopChuckie wrote:Was about to tell you not to touch the original olympic white finish...., that yellowed top coat looked amazing!!!..., but I'm totally into blue JMs. Looking forward to this.

I'll ask MJT for updates soon. Also definitely going mint from spitfire on this one. Just got these tuners which will also be going on it:minimumnishe wrote:Damn I think just about everyone on this forum drools over that guitar... Refin is done!
Here are some crap pictures I took at night. Out of town for a week, but then I'll be working on this thing to get it back to being my #1! Not going to use the grovers on it anymore. Those are going onto something else I have planned.
