Black and metallic purple is an awesome combo! I kinda did a Jaguar Thinline build in that colour scheme (that is to say, I got most of the parts but sold and repurposed them before they made it to the finish line).

Good lord. If you did that (purple metallic) it would push me even deeper into gas-land. I might have to ask for a twin.

Anyone know how you would secure the slotted string guide at the front of the fretboard for the zero fret?

I'm not sure how they are attached in the original Yamaha. I know Danelectros use a screw into the fretboard. User theworkoffire made a brass string guide and glued it in place for his replica. I've seen people use a small metal pin (or two) sticking out of the bottom of the guide, and matching up to corresponding hole(s) in the neck.

I removed the 'nut' from my Yamaha SG-2 by knocking it sideways and found two little pins are used to fix it to the fretboard. I broke them off and use a single drop of superglue to attached it to the end of the fretboard. I'll do that with all my string-guide nuts and works really well. It also allows for easy removal if required.

I've finally selected pickups for this project. I have a pair of '68 Teisco/Silverstone square pole pickups incoming. They should look great in a black pickguard.


The neck is waiting to be carved still. I was going to copy the carve from my '67, but it has a definite V profile as you get closer to the nut that I don't think I want to replicate. Maybe I'll do a more full V carve based on the general dimensions of my '67.

Oh yeah, those pickups are going to look amazing. Hope they sound good too, I don't know anything about them at all.

These are the models used on the Teisco K4L "Sharkfin". They are supposed to be great sounding, bright and clear with a low wind.

^Great choice, I really like these. Bright and clear does describe them, nice strong bass response too, although they're not necessarily low wind. I have two sets, the earlier ones (if I'm informed correctly) are around 7k and are in a guitar exactly like the one in your pic. I also have a supposedly later set that measure at a bit over 3k. Not as punchy, but still quite similar.

Finally more progress on the body. Did the round overs and contours this morning. Still needs the bridge holes and neck screw holes. I still need to make the pickguard, so I used the original from my '67 (shown here) for reference on the lower contours. I'm also going to compare it to my '67 later and see if I need to refine any contours.



*edit. Body weight is 3.5 lbs. Should be a great final weight.

^Curves and contours look to flow very nicely.

Neck carve is finally done. It's a chunky C, approx. 0.88-0.98, but I tried to keep to the spirit of my original Yamaha's headstock and heel transitions.


Also, I'm putting this here more for me than anyone, but I popped off a pickup cover to see which wire went where on these.


I need to make a custom template for these pickups. I also need to track down some screws, Something new, that'll require re-tapping the threads in the pickups.
