Dual Dial-A-Tap mod on a Jazzmaster

Post by WilburBufferson » Sun May 19, 2019 1:51 pm

Hey all. I found this old thread about how to do this mod here:

http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... =8&t=14036

I used to have the Fender Jaguar HH Special that comes stock with the ability to do this (but the switch on the upper bout is a kill switch, and does not allow you to switch between lead and the "dial a tap" settings).

The Fender diagram calls for 50K linear pots though -- I know this was an open question in the old thread (above).

My question is, will this work?

Here is the guitar that will get the treatment (on the left, obviously). One of the nicest guitars I've ever owned. It was perfect out of the box, even though I intended on putting humbuckers in it from the start! I haven't figured out how to attach a photo, so here's a link to a post over on TDPRI.

I'm a Jazzmaster Guy?

So you have 4-wire HBs to go into your JM ?

The pots that do the split in the HH special jaguar are indeed both 50k linear ...

So 50k would be a good place to start. There are suggestions elsewhere that higher values (eg 500k) concentrate the split all in the upper range of the pot.

The suggested wiring in that old thread is similar to SD's ....

And the the slide switch just takes the split circuit totally out, rather than being a kill switch.

Rothstein's wiring also appears broadly similar from the pics.

Hey timtam, thank-you! Yes, they are 4-wire. I got them from Rose Pickups. They are unbelievably bright for a humbucker, and very similar to JM single coils. I was thinking of changing the pots in the lead circuit down to 500K to deal with this, but for now, I'll keep things as they are because they sound pretty good. Why mess with a good thing?
