Wiring: JM 3 pickups and serie (+extra switch)
Hi Guys
I am trying to figure out a wiring.
Ok so the basic are Rhythm circuit for the 2 JM pickups. Easy, I have this implemented on my other JMs.
Now, for the 3rd pickup, I want to implement an extra switch in order to activate it.
And when activated, I want it to be in serie with the others.
I've come up with this drawing. Working or not ?
Thanks in advnace for your input.
Cheers

I am 100% not an expert, but I've done a couple wiring mods. Unless I am missing something, I think your third pickup is missing a ground wire. Could somebody back me up or prove me wrong on that?

It depends on the specific pickup, but most Strat style single coils are just two wires. Jaguars too.grapesoda wrote:I am 100% not an expert, but I've done a couple wiring mods. Okay cool, my bad.
So why wouldn't one of the wires go to the ground, like they do on the other two pickups? Genuine question, as I'm trying to learn more about this stuff.

Putting to groud the - wire would result in parallel in my understanding.
Here it is entirely in the signal path and again in my understanding in serie.
This actually what i want to confirm

Oooh gotcha, so grounding it would not be *wrong* from an electronics point of view, but would be a different effect from what you want?

Hi Fabz, it looks OK to me at first (and second!) glance.
What I'm not 100% sure of is the outcome when the three-way toggle is in the middle position and the third pickup is switched into the circuit (all three pickups on | B/N in parallel ->series with Middle). I think there'll be a partial out of phase condition with one half of the parallel output and the middle pickup.
Not that there's a problem with that; I suspect it'll be a interesting and unique sound!
So you'll have the following switching options:
Neck
Neck + Bridge
Bridge
3rd pickup switched in
Neck + Middle, in series
Neck + Bridge in parallel, output then connected in series through the middle pickup
Bridge + Middle, in series
Depending on the result you may wish to implement a high-pass filter on the series outputs - My experiments with 2 x Jazzmaster pickups in series was a fairly muddy result with mountains of lows and low-mids. Either way I'd go for a bright sounding, underwound pickup for the 3rd pickup.
Let us know how you go, and if you have the opportunity please post a sound clip once you're finished.
Cheers!

Cheers Andy
Yeah the middle position sounds like it is going to be interesting
I was also considering having the std JM PUs out of phase in middle position in order to achieve something really 'coherent' with the 3 PU engaged.
Thanks for reminding me that that cap is needed in order to remove the mud when in serie
Will do my best to post sound clips when done
Cheers
